you can go with black diamond sand or the such, I am not a sand fan, I like to sink my vacuum tube in and let the gravel filter out to clean it. and my fish diggers, I run jags and Oscars, I have had my Jag grab a mouth full of sand and spit it right at the intake. not good for the impeller chamber.
