New Sump Idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
"That is, of course, if you take my suggestion on using Lucky Bamboo & Java Moss. If you use fully aquatic plants you can keep the baffles the way you have them which makes the plant chamber maintain a very high water level."

That has me confumbled nc...

Change in heights of water levels within the sump can only be in descending order.

^^lol, you are right... I don't know what I was thinking :P

I personally do not design a bio chamber into sumps so right after the refugium chamber (plant chamber) is the pump chamber, so the lower level in the refugium is practical...

Thanks for pointing out my mistake Burko!

hmm ok i get what u are saying in the plant chambers like in this one, But i don't understand is wont the plant chamber fill up anyways? So if i keep it like my last prototype which requires full aquatics plants. then what plants would i use? There would have to be some kinda of subtrate to keep plant alive right? So i am guessing i would have to make some kinda of a acrylic box to keep subtrate and plants from floating away in two the media. ok other then that is there anything else i am missing?

Burk was right, even in the pic you quoted above, the water level in teh plant chamber will be as high as the highest wall to it's right...

Keep in mind you will need the functioning water level of your sump to be low enough so that when you turn the pump off the water above the overflow point can drain into the sump. The amount of space required for this will depend on the overflow you use and the ratio of surface area between your sump and aquarium.

If space above the sump/refugium allows, you can still use the Lucky Bamboo & Java Moss I mentioend earlier.

I suggest against using 'substrate' in the refugium / plant chamber. I found these "mini milk crates" at Wal-Mart that have holes in them. The holes fit Lucky Bamboo perfectly. The "mini milk crates" also fit in both 5 & 10 gal tanks perfectly depending on which way you rotate them.

Here is a pic of the "minim milk crates" with Lucky Bamboo in them in some of my fry tanks.

i could save some money and get pot scrubbers instead of so media?

I don't pay top dollar for aquarium media... you can find different density sponges at much more reasonable prices at any number of other stores (grocery store, dollar type stores, mega stores, etc)...

Quilt batting/stuffing works wonderful as a fine filter media... Pillow stuffing works but breaks apart much easier...

'pot scrubies'' would be used in place of your bio balls, which you already have...

things like Purigen you can only get in aquarium grade...
