Finally got round to buying a new tank to make into my new sump after spending ages complaining about the one that the company made to go with my tank.
I had to buy 10mm acrylic and get the holes cut with a laser because none of the glaziers around me cut holes as large as 95mm into glass, one even tried to tell me it can't be done. The acrylic sits on two "shelves" and is siliconed into place. Before the silicone police spit out their dummies and start arguing that it doesn't stick, it does. Maybe not enough for anything overly strenuous but it does stick. It is mainly to provide the seal to keep the water from bypassing the socks anyway so strength was not my concern. Also, should the acrylic break, it is easily slid out and replaced.

This might be a dumb question....how do you hold the pieces in place while you apply the silicone?

Looks cool, I'm in the process of setting up a 20l sump I just picked up but it only has two baffles in it to divide the sump into 3 sections...thinking a little modification might be in order.

The two "shelves" had the silicone applied to them and they were then just stuck on the glass at pre-marked points like stickers. The pen marks allowed me to silicone straight onto the sump instead of the two baffles, siliconing the baffles would have led to streaks of silicone on the sump as the pieces were put in and moved into place.

I like it..what size is tank??

It is a 30x15x12" tank. Not huge but more than enough mechanical and plenty room for bio media to suit my tank.

Looks good. Is this for saltwater? what else is going in the sump?

Is the acrylic green edge?

No, freshwater. I will be adding my bio balls from the other sump, no need to change they work just fine.
The acrylic is glass look acrylic, it was the cheapest.

any issue with water not making it to the filter sock? it doesnt seem like you have a strong seal between the filter socks and glass they sit on.. i was wondering how much water is getting under the plastic ring and not into the sock. any issues with the sock possibly lifting off the glass it sits on?

i wanted to do the same thing with 3 corse, dropping down to 3 fine, finally trickleing over a wet dry with 8-10 gallons of bioballs

so i think there might be a little bit of bypass but i don't think much. The socks fit pretty tightly.

When the socks get full the water overflows the chamber, as i designed it to do so. So there can't be too much bypass.

The socks seem to stay in place well, no lifting or anything, but a tight fit helps that. I'm setting up a 180 gal with a 65 gal sump designed the same way, the new socks are 7x16 which seem more flexible then the 4x8's not sure how they will do.

My current tank is looking better then ever. I had a fluval 404 before which has a lot of bypass.
