So I set up my gf a new tank 30 gallon and it's been cycling for about a month now...we have fish in it and they seem not to have a problem
The water started to clear up but then got cloudy again

I have no clue whats going on my tank never clouds up
She has a filter on it and everything

Will this problem go away soon? How soon
Or what can I do to fix it

did you clean the tank before it got cloudy? have you tested the water? is it cloudy white? if you cleaned the filter with regular tap water then you destroyed all the bacteria you need. could be a bacteria bloom, how often do you feed the fish? how long do you leave the light on? there is so many reasons it could be cloudy... water changes is what i would do. 30% a day until it is clear, but i am no means a pro

Wow, Austin!

Tell her to cut back on the feeding until it clears up.

Edit: The only real benefit for feeding twice a day would be to grow the fish quickly. I feed my fish once every three days and they are fine.

The only other reason I could see even feeding them once a day is if there are very active swimmers such as danios.

washing the filter in tap water im sure killed your bacteria you have been building up, so have to start the cycle all over. your ammonia levels are prob high do 30% water change test the water if ammonia is still there then i would do another 30% day after. wash the filter in the water from the tank, or in a bucket with treated tap water.. if your on a well then tap water should be fine.i feed mine once a day, guess it depends on what fish you have.. again thats what i would do, i am not a pro. someone else might have better advice:)

hey man i have dealt with this question alot if its a new tank and its milky then actually its not horrible so relax. its a bloom of GOOD bacteria. see when you cycle a freshwater tank after a week of cycleing you want to add a small fish into the tank to help with the process. the fish's waste gives off bad bacteria and the good bacteria sometime die and they also eat it. i dunno what kind of bacteria's fish give off and i dont know the names of all the good bacteria in your tank. so anyways i found the best way is yes deffinitly just shut off your light for days. cut back feeding to every two to three days (when the problem is fixed only feed once everyother day anymore and your trying to grow a trophy winner, and that should be left to people with a lot of experience) now yes water changes every day for three days 20% and you can use a product called crystal clear. it helps balance your bacteria levels so your water is clear again. DONT WASH OUT YOUR FILTER. your filter is the main area where your good bacteria colony grow. if you wash that then you loose a major part of your filtering. just do what i said above and your water should be clear again. also after the three days do two more every two days then go back to your once a week. hope it helps. have a good one

You do realize fish can go a week or 10 days without food right? Lots of folks do this when they go on vacation. Fish don't eat everyday in the wild.

Fish don't produce body heat like humans do therefor they don't need food like us. Most of it goes to growing. When I first started and was doing water changes every other day, I fed them 2-3 times a day but now that I only clean the tank once a month and I'm not trying to grow them fast, it's every 3 days.
