New Tank- Cracked

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't think it's cracked but if your trippin about it, get a small sheet of glass and silicone the crap out of it. On and around the so called "cracks". Good luck. I think you'll be fine bro.

I have fixed a number of cracked tanks, you remove the silicone along the edge enough so that you can put another piece of glass over the crack.

I use GE 1 to cover a thin layer over the crack, and a liberal amount the edge of the glass on the inside pane

I do the same on the outside .
Use pressure to hold it while curing at least 24 hours

The above repair was on a 120 gal, and the repair cost @ $50 for 4 panes of glass and the silcone on 2 cracks.
Here is the re[air 36 hours later

Below is the tank as of a day or 2 ago.

Hey guys thanks a lot for all the posts! I definitely learned my lesson, as I shouldn't have bought the tank so quick... there was a lot of dust on the bottom which I believe threw me off but that's no excuse. Next time I will certainly look closer. Duanes I appreciate you showing me the repair process, that might be my last hope if it is cracked. As for everyone saying it's just scratches. They do appear light and not deep at all, but how deep is too deep? I'm relatively new to aquariums and this is my first big tank (for me anyway lol).. 2 10 gallons a 29 gallon and a 40 are my others I have owned. My problem is that I will be putting this tank in my garage apartment and no telling the damage that will be caused should it break and go through the floor. Couple questions, is there anyway I can tell if the they are scratches or cracks? As I mentioned non go through the tank, but how deep is too deep. The tank never had water in it, it was purchased a year ago and placed in the basement (with accessories in it such as filter, heater, light, canopy etc) could these have scratched the bottom? Is there a way I can test the tank ex fill it up outside for a few days will that be proof? or could it still be a time bomb even if it holds fine for a few days. Finally I emailed support at oceanic and the lady said it might be silicone threads. Those would pop out though no? These cracks/scratches clearly go into the tank.. Anyway thanks for your replys any further help/advice will be appreciated!

Ok so I'm quite possibly the noob of the year but it is possible that they are not in fact in the glass but possibly over the glass. The warranty lady at Oceanic said it could be silicone threads.. I've been scraping them with my nail but nothing is really happening. Can I use a knife or is there anything you guys would recommend which wouldn't harm the tank should it in fact not be scratches.. Sorry I know i'm all over the place, I just spent a ton on this tank noticed these cracks like things on the bottom and started freaking out.

Use s single edge razor blade use the tip to gage how deep they are ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1370554561.055800.jpg this is my 75 as you see it's badly scratched but its still holding strong.

The best rule to remember when buying tanks from Craigslist or mfk (used or new) is to ask the see the tank completely full of water. Then carefully check along the bottom, sides and top for any signs of leaks or damage. Check under the stand too for signs of water damage.

I've avoided buying a couple bad tanks because of this. One guy tried to sell me a tank that was half full. It was a 240g for only $400. When I asked him to fill it up completely he said he was too lazy to fill it. I later learned that it leaked pretty badly and he left town right after selling it. Another guy tried to sell me a 300g acrylic tank that had a bad chip in the corner. He said it was fine, but there was a lot of water damage under the support of the stand. So i avoided two bad deals bc of careful inspection.

Looks like just scratches BUT like someone else said I'd take the tip of a razor blade to them to test the depth. If they're much below the surface it's a goner or you'll need to repair.

Same thing has almost happened to me with Craigslist. Almost bought a 75g years ago with a giant crack down the middle. It was dark so I didn't notice it until I started loading it in my vehicle :(
