ok, i know how organized this website is, and not in a good way. but i need help deciding. i just got a 110 gallon show tank, 48"x18"x31" and i'm in the process of cycling it. i bought it cause i had a 125 and when i got rid of it, i was heart broken. so i bought this one. well i have 4 serrasalmus maculatus (gold macs) that i was going to put in it. they are at 5" each, schooled together in a 30 gallon tank with an emperor 400 on it.

my dilemma; im not quite sure if i want to put the piranhas in the show tank. i mean with the piranhas the last 20" of the height would be wasted. as they are not the most active. so if you were me, would you keep the piranhas in the 30, grow them out a bit, and get a tank with a larger footprint verse height for them, and set-up this show tank the way you want it (more active, bottom, middle, and topwater dwellers)? or would you put the piranhas in it, and daydream daily what you could have done? im at a loss. i love my piranhas, but like i said, they hang out at the bottom of the tank until feeding time. they are very active, but once again they stay within the bottom 6-8" of the tank.

oh choices and possibilities, i need some help here. in the end i will prolly cave to my piranhas in the tank. but im keeping an open mind.

I would still put them in the 110g, if you do think its empty even after doing it, maybe you could add some tall plants and lots of decorations to fill some of the space? Once your piranhas are fully grown there won't be much empty space you speak of...and leaving them in the 30g will only slow their growth rate probably...its better just to give them the extra room even if the 110g does seem empty with them in it

So like set up your tank similar to this to get rid of that "emptiness" feeling,

well the piranhas have only been in the 30 gallon for about 3 weeks. so you can all dispell the abusive fish owner lol. but in all seriousness, the tank is cycling, so i will be adding black sand and need to get a new light fixture for plants. find a way to black out the back of the tank, then it'll be picture ready, as for the piranhas my avatar is a picture of my piranhas about 4 months ago, they have grown about 1.5-2" since i took those pictures. C L O W N K N I F E, i was more then likely going to put them in, this thread is to keep me dreaming so when i get the piranhas moved out of this 110 into a bigger one i have a choice... more or less.

any suggestions for plant's in such a deep tank?

Piranha in a planted tank would look nice. Deep tanks are also great for tall drift wood too. Not sure what plant to get just get what ever you think looks nice and give it a try.

i like the way you think lol. thats prolly what i was going to do anywho. don't have a wide variety of plants here. you guys think with how tall this tank is, if i got it planted properly, a shoal of tetras would be possible. i've done it in the past in shallow tanks, but with it being a deep tank i would imagine it be easier for middle dwellers would be safer the they would be in a 20" tall tank, or 18" tall tank.

i just read a thread about someone trying to school silver dollars into his piranha school. and ended lest the spectacular. i figured tetras mainly cause i can shoal them in a group of 20-30, and that would act as their own defense in confusing the piranhas. but i guess i could always try it right? this is starting to turn out pretty good in my head. im liking these ideas. keep em coming tho.

Ya, I guess it doesn't hurt to try...just don't be surprised when most are missing lol (it could work though, never know). It would be cool to have exodon tetras with piranhas but I doubt it would work out

yea, considering exodons are another type of piranha type fish. that could end badly for me. im liking your plant idea, never been anygood at growing plants, but shoo, rights nows as best a time as any to learn. this tank is gong to look pretty awesome. i just need to find a good piece of driftwood tho
