Hi; it's only been around a week since I started up my new tank and filter. The tank (surprisingly) seemed to finish it's long cycling process since I had alot of fish in there. But, I noticed the filter was getting weaker so I turned it off and took at the 3 cartridges and rinsed them with tap water. While rinsing them I the carbon(the black one) made the water below turn black. And I rinsed the other 2 cartridges(sponge and bio). I placed it back into my tank and turned it on and after a few minutes, the water turned surprisingly white(cloudy than before). Did I just rinse off the beneficial bacteria too? I am worried about the 30+ minnows(feeders) that are in there too. And worried about my turtle in cloudy water.

Also, since the tank is only half-way filed and I am using a filter that hangs onto the side of the tank, it splashes everywhere. And since there are lots of chemicals in our local waters, when the water dries, it kinda leaves a white stain on my tank.(I guess mildew..) Are there anyways to get these thing off before it turns into a BIG mess?

And last, when my turtle chases the fish and corners them to strike, he bangs his head on the glass but would this crack or break the tank?

what size tank do you have? and you killed your beneficial bacteria by washing it in plain tap water. next time take some water from the tank and rinse the cartridges off in that. also did u rinse all the media for ur filter b4 starting it up? that would have gotten rid of all the white and black dust.

all my turtles are filtered with mechanical pads only....once in awhile I throw a carbon bag but that usually when I'm going away.... I don't worry about BB with my regular turtles.... do a 90% water change and start over....

The white cloudiness could br an algae bloom.

Yes, unfortunately you killed the bacteria, hopefully some remained to re-colonize the filter.

You could get some Bio Spira bottled bacteria to boost the filters cycle time.

The white residue should be calcium deposits and such. Once dried water usually won't take it off and you have to use vinegar (basically break down the tank and clean it then put everybody back, and keep filter running in a separate tank/tub/bucket).

Put a plate on the end of the filter to guide the filter return closer to the water in the tank.

Turtles are a joy to watch and a pain to keep.

How about some pix of your pride & joy :D.

yes, lets see that masterpiece, please

thank you, it's a half-filled 40gallon breeder.
So there's no way to get the white calcium build-up other than vinegar?
Can I scrape it off with something that won't hurt the glass

Nic; what is BB?

And yes I did wash everything before putting them in the filter
