4" airlifts work well in deeper water,but another tank i had was just 28" deep and worked nearly as well.another tank had 3" lift in 22" of water pumping approx 1200-1500 gph.they work very well as long as you can have tank,filter water levels the same. check www.freshwaterstingray.nl for airlift build info.mine are the same just different dia.what i was after was an economical pumping system this was best i could find.
This may seem a little rudimentary, but just to make sure I understand your pluming and flow set-up:
The airlifts obviously carries the water from the lower levels of your water collumn. Then it enters your sumps in the top and you just plumb it back to thetop of your tank from the bottom of the sumps, right?
Are you having to incorporate any bubble traps to reduce micro bubbles in the tank?

i the airlifts lift water from bottom of tank up along sewer pipe into top of first filter tank,its mechanically filtered in half that tank,then water comes up through static bio,then through 6" pipes to second part of filter which is fluidised k1 media then returns back to tank through 6" pipes.no bubble traps
The air lift seems like the way to go for larger aquaria. If I ever built the "dream" tank (4K+ gallons) I'm building this filter system into it. Thanks for the info; I loved that link about the giant sting ray tank! Awesome.
