New tank for new found love

Why not a red wolf fish? Smaller and way more active i hear and you have a better chance with tank mates. People succesfully keep them with bichirs and they only need a 40g. Others have told me its a hit or miss with other tankmates depending on the particular fish of course so pretty much an aggressive cichlid

Well to be honest the main idea was really to have a relatively large specimen. While i know 14-20" isnt huge for the case of the common wolf or 2' for the black. Its big enough for me :). The no tank mates thing isn't the biggest deal for me, I mainly assumed it was just healthier for the fish to not be alone lol. But ya I guess the idea of a "lone wolf" tank with literally a wolf in it really puts a smile on my face.

I get that you're wanting a bigger fish. The comments about the red wolf fish being far more active/interactive definitely seem on track to me though. I've never kept a black or common...and one of my red wolves kind of fits that description of a "log until feeding time"...but my other red wolf fish is a VERY active little guy. He's often swimming/hunting in the tank...and when the top of the tank is opened, he's ready to eat. In fact, he's twice jumped his entire body length out of the tank to bite me while I'm feeding him!

So it is something you might consider. Granted they don't get huge, but 8-10 inches is still pretty respectable, especially when you take into account the ferocity.

Id have to maul it over i guess, and once again see if I can get anything other than the common lol

I just got a baby red wolf that's living peacefully with my bichirs. Red wolves generally just get 8 inches. Anything bigger is extremely rare.

common or a black wof will make an excellent centre piece fish in a single fish tank WHILE a red wolf is a tankmate that can be kept with larger or simalar sized fish.

Species tank is the best bet. I would put a single mal in a 90 with some gorgeous aquascaping.

I think Im gona go with a Mal. Next step...do Transformers aqua scapes exist?? Would be so sick to have an underwater cybertron!

Get a Red Wolf, even though you say you're not worried about their activity, you're going to be disappointed. They are much better fish to keep than Malas.
