new tank, help!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The attached website offers a new type of equipment, new to me anyhow, that provides a money back guarentee to help with your water clarity and overall conditioning. It use a process called molecular ionization.

I have just placed an order and can not tell you of the results yet but the reviews of the product look very impressive and it is relatively inexpensive.
Hope this helps

Can't wait to hear if it works. Sounds interesting.

First I would cut the lights for a couple days. Second how are you cleaning the gravel. Don't stir it up use the gravel siphen in the plunging motion. Try to cut down the feeding a bit. I personally think 50% water change is too much at one time. If all else fails Go with a Fluval 404 canister or Eheim and buy something called Acural F its the best water clarifier I've ever used. Hope some of those suggestions help

I have left the lights off. I put in the Acurel F. Still cloudy as all get out!!!!! Didn't feed them at all yesterday, only a few pellets this morning. If not cleared up by tomorrow, give it one more day on the acurel f, I guess I will try the no more algae.

The guy at the lfs told me to put in ammonia chips in my filter, I did. Nothing.

I am going crazy here!!!

I just posted, a little over an hour ago, that even after adding ammonia chips, and Acurel F, yesterday, that my tank was still cloudy. Before I put up that post, I added more Acurel F. I just stood up to go to the little girls room and about droped dead!!!

I have a beautiful tank!!!!! I don't remember the last time I saw such beautifully clear water!!!!!! It absolutely awesome!!!!!!

But the question now is....... for how long???

Thanks all for all of your help and suggestions! I sure hope this has done the trick. :clap

I also have occasional cloudy water from algae bloom. The way I deal with it is a Diatom filter, I run it once a week for a day when I do my tank maintenence and the water stays crystal clear all week.

To be quite honest with you I'm not certain an algae bloom is your issue. I think you might be going through a bacterial bloom. When you setup your tank you said it was Feb 17, how did you start it up, did you add fish right away, if not, did you add anything to create ammonia to start the nitrogen cycle? I never have water clarity problems and don't like to use chemicals outside of dechlor (Prime). Your sytem when cycled with an Emp 400 should naturally keep it crystal clear. If your going through a cycle it will probably take another week or so before you have clear water (and you very well could loose your fish)....

I let the tank and filter run for 7 days before I added fish. I bought two baby oscars and 1 pleco. It was clear when I added the fish, and within a couple of days was cloudy. One morning I woke up and it was like a solid wall of fog. The water was soooo white, you could not see a fish unless it came right up against the glass. The next morning, it was clear. But not like this clear. This is CRYSTAL CLEAR!!! You can't tell that the tank is not built into the wall. (The tank and stand finish is almost exactly the same as my paneling)
I did two things..... Acurel F, for clarity..... and Ammoia Chips for getting rid of ammonia..... Not sure which one did the trick.... But I am absolutely AMAZED!!!!! I am also amazed that my fish seem totally healthy. They never did seem to have a problem with what was going on! Except for 2 clown loaches, I have had NO problem with my fish. And with the loaches, that was ick. I was out of town for a week, my hubby has no clue about fish tanks, and when I got home it was already toooo late. My oscars and pleco are perfectly healthy!!!! It amazes me. I figured I would lose them too. But not, they are still here and full of attitude!!!!

Thanks for caring!!!!!!!

what coolor is the cloudyness WHITE??? GREEN??? BROWN??

#1 your tank was'nt cycled long enough for these type of cichlid's and cat..

#2 a second filter, canister or hangon back type is recommended .
oscar 's make alot of poopy if you feed them allot , don't let then fool you they allway's beg for food if there not some thing's not right with them...

#3 your placo is it a common ?? if so sell/trade it back for a smaller sized specie of placo
with a common it get's to large for the aquarium... chinese alge eater or smaller growning placo is a better way to go for over all tank health ..

thouse chemical's that suddenly clear water up in mear hour's are fast but sort term fix it will cloud again. and soon , if it is white it's bacteria . leave your water alone but monitor ammonia and cut your food amount in half... it will clear on it's own it take's time week's month's even .. the excess bacteria that does'nt establish in the filter or gravel/sand will die off...

hang tight and let us know the color of cloudyness.. :D

Well I hate to break this to you, but from what you're indicating you're having a bacterial bloom. You say you ran your tank for a week prior to adding fish. The problem with this is, there is no waste to start the nitrogen cycle. You could run it for a year, and without anything to first create ammonia, your tank would not be cycled. When you introduced your fishies, they start creating ammonia through their gill functions and waste, hence your cloudy water. You are far from out of the woods, cycling a tank can take up to 40 days, and you are going to go through a nitirite spike once your ammonia is cleared. Once your tank is completley cycled, your water will be crystal w/out additives that are just masking the problem. Do a search on cycling a tank, I believe there is a sticky. Also when you use ammonia chips when cycling you're prolonging the process, however at this stage I would leave them in for the safety of your fish.....
