New tank I need Ideas and help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe the guy at my LFS lied to me he said that he was about 8 months old when I got him I have had him for 3-4. He grew from .5 to 1.5" in that time.
I'm guessing that from what you are saying he was wrong and that he was not 8months when I got him.

It wasn't 8 months old when you got it.
1 inch in 3-4 months is still extremely slow growth for an oscar.

wow he is deffinatlly stunted from being in that tank. first oscar i had i got at 1.5" and he grew to 7 inchs is 9 months .. the other i got at 4 inchs .. in 9 months he is now lil over 9 inchs .. they are fast growers. hes defffffinatly stunted in a ten gallon.

Well I will get him in the 30 ASAP and work on getting the 55 set up but I won't be able to pull it out of storage for at least a couple months.
So in the mean time the 30 will have to do.
What were your thought on the substrate and decor?

substrate a decor? doesnt matter a whole lot on substrate. i use pool filter sand with my oscars .. and a black background. brings out his colors (tiger oscar) .. as for decor. good luck is all i have to say. oscars are im pretty sure then #1 terrorizers of decor. whatever you put in there wont stay where you put it. mine tore apart my drift wood and re arranged everything in my tank .. if i fix it. he puts it all back where he likes it .. every single day. that doesnt happen till they are ike 6" though i find

You could do substrate but why bother? Isn't this going to only be a temporary set-up?

what is your guys thoughts on the those in tank ph/nitrate test kits, the ones that stay in the tank, vs the test strips

That sounds like a severely stunted fish, both my oscars are only 6 months old and already pushing 8". An oscar should NEVER be in anything smaller than a 55. How often did you do a water change?

For now I would have it in the 30 with bare bottom and no decor as anything you put into the 30 takes away some of the water. The more water you can have right now the better.

As for the testing strips vs. the in tank I would say neither. go to your LFS and get a liquid drop style test, I use the API and I know that is what a lot of the experienced keepers on here use.
