New tank picked up, 180 gallons for turtle(s)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Great!! I think we've decided on going with what's available at the Rescue. (www.corhs.org). Going to start working on decorations and I'm looking for someone else to make a new custom stand and canopy for us as the one that came with the tank was just a black painted 2x6 frame. Emailed a half dozen custom furniture makers off craigslist.

These turtles will be Monsters for us, as the next biggest fish/reptile/amphibian we own is a 3.5" Candy Stripe Pleco followed by some 2.5" Petricola Catfish.

Oh and the tank we bought came with a 10 gallon quarantine tank with filter and heater. I was thinking of breeding guppies or mollies or something to use as special snacks? Good/Bad? I've never owned anything that uses feeders, but what I've read is that "feeder fish" from a LFS are horrible for things due to conditions and care.

I would do guppies

Mata Mata's aren't hard to find in the area at all, the Scales in Tails inn both Colorado Springs and North Glen get them on a regular basis. They also get Spiny Softshells, which if you got a male would be perfect for that size than and vastly more entertaining that a RES.

I actually called the three Scales and Tails, up north (sorry, Co Springs and Pueblo are a bit out of the way) and they didn't have any and said they hadn't had any in a long time.

weird, I just picked one up about a month ago from the one in north glen LOlk

Chinese softshell com tank. 3 would be great

I disagree. Three of these animals in 100g of water would create sub-standard living conditions at best, even if you only count the stress of overcrowding.

Update on our Tank Planning Progress

I emailed a half dozen or so guys on Craigslist and a few friends to see who would be interested in making us a new custom stand and canopy. We've got about a $500-$600 budget for this part. We want the bottom half divided in half so there's room to put a small "cat" door on one side and put the cat litter box in the stand.

I'm looking at a Fluval FX5 for the filtration and then we are going to a Rock Yard this weekend to try and find some slate pieces to build a 3d background and a basking area.

Still trying to decide on the substrate, I know gravel can be bad, but I'd like to have something over the bottom. Flourite? a fine Sand? Crushed Coral?

If I do Flourite, I'd likely do some clippings of plants from my other tanks and use the 10 gallon quarantine tank that came with the big one for breeding guppies and growing more plants.

Turtles will be what ever needs a good home from the Colorado Reptile Humane Society
