New Tank pics!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just added a new black background. Got the fabric from Wal-Mart, taped it on the back. Looked great when I left it, I hope it hasn't fallen though. I also added the Rift Lake recipe, 25 tsp of aquarium salt, 25 tsp of Epsom salt, and 25 tsp of baking soda. My old master test kit ran out so I ordered a new Hagen master kit from Thatfishstore.com so hopefully it will come sometime this week.

Go get a huge chunk of driftwood that will reach close to the top of the tank. Most African Cichlids are hanging around the bottom and the crevices. You want to bring those caves and crevices as high up as possible. I just redid this tank about 7 weeks ago and I'm thinking of heading back to the landscaping supply company for more rocks to try to get them higher up in the tank.

New pics soon. I just installed the two Fluval 405s along with the heaters. The only bad thing though is that my grandfather made me take off the black background. For some reason he wants to see all the pipes and wires. Anyways besides that the tank looks great. Just tested the water. PH is at 8.1 (Malawi recipe), Nitrates 0, Nitrites 0, and just a bairly readable amount of ammonia. Tank is now beginning its second week of fishless cycling. I am super happy with the Fluvals, they are VERY easy to set up. So far they work great and are very near silent. So when can I stock the first inhabitants?

Looks good. I think it could use a bit more rock work as well.

i was just about to say that but you beat me to it.... love the tank...:headbang2

Be careful with driftwood. It will lower the PH. Since you have the "recipe" you shouldn't have any problems though.

And yeah, rock avalanches can be disastrous!

What if I dont end up putting more rock in? I dont want to have a rock avalanche and I think putting more rock in will make my grandfather really nervous. I have a lot of caves for the mbuna, I know its enough but will it work?

It will work, and I agree with your grandfather on rock avalanches making someone nervous. My largest tank is a 75 and I'm really scared of my rocks slipping.

I have a lot of driftwood in my tank and it looks great...I would recommend it, that way the tank still looks full and my mbunas seem to love both wood and rocks.
