Well my LFS finally got in it's shipment of eco complete so my 6' tank now has substrate. I have some river rocks and have ordered some plants. When they arrive I will attach some plants to driftwood and work out my landscape (or is that tankscape?)

I have also ordered a nice big batch of feeder fish to assist with tank cycling. I am sure the current denizens of my 105g will appreciate them once they are moved into the bigger tank with it's ready made snacks....

Photos to come as tank is set up.....

Why? Plants can actually help with the cycle. They love ammonia and nitrates.

The tank has water and a filter (some used media) running now and there are a couple of java moss balls. Will take a few days for the plants and feeder fish to arrive so things will already start cycling by then. Looking forward to getting it running and the fish into their bigger quarters as they have really outgrown the 4 foot (105g) tank.

The only reason I would wait, is you build a stronger BB base without the plants.

are you going to be using the filters off the 105?

I have used some of the media from the 105g filter, but the 175 has it's own

You would be best to not add any used media until you have a source of ammonia (your fish you are getting) for the good bacteria to feed on... If you put it in now any good bacteria will start dying off since there isnt any ammonia source for them.

Southpawz - I hadn't intended on it being so long - I expected the feeder fish (75 livebearers) I ordered to have shown up by now but they haven't. It's no biggy really - when they do show up I can always do a media swap again with the 105g, put the stuff I pulled out back and put the replacements in the 175g as by that time the media would have built up enough BB.

I'm a bit annoyed that things haven't arrived as yet... Problem with ebay/mail order I guess. I expected the heaters and plants to be here days ago. I guess it's the price you pay for cheaper prices.

I have also decided to get a second filter - there doesn't appear to be much water movement with the one I was given (aqua one CF 1200) I can get a good price on a resun extreme EF 2800 so am planning on adding it to the other end of the tank. Between the 2 should be more than enough filtration
