I am going to be picking up a new tank in the next week or two and I would like some advice.

I have been keeping fish, fresh and some salt for over 15 years, but no real LARGE cichlids, just some smaller ones.

I would like to stock;

1 Oscar
1 Severum
1 Chocolate cichlid
1 Sysnspilum

...and maybe some (5,7) Silver dollars

What size tank do you recommend?
...gallons/footprint

I really don't want any more fish than this and would probably stock them all at the same time, except for maybe the Silver Dollars.

-thanks in advance.

I believe a 125 and 150 have the same footprint 6x1.5. The 150 is just taller. I would say either one of those would be fine but if you can do it, a 180 which is a 6x2x2 would be nice and probably will give you the extra room if you change your mind about limiting your stock. Bigger is always better.

And yes sump or canister. I personally run 2 canisters. An Eheim pro2 2028 and a eheim 2215 on my 120. Would have loved to go bigger but im limited in an apartment in NYC.

Yes the 6' 125 and 150 have the same footprint, but the 150 is just taller. There is also another common 150 which I believe is a 4x3x3? Not 100% sure on exact dimensions but I believe I'm pretty close. They always have one or two set up for sale at my local Petsmart so I believe they're easy to obtain. Also, that footprint may be better for your stock. Hope that was of some assistance to you.

4 x 3 x 3 = 270 gallon

I know what your talking about I think its like 4 x 2 x 2.

I would say at least a 6ft tank.

I can get a 180 gallon that is drilled with 2 overflows for $685.

OR

I could get a 220 gallon that is not drilled for $680.

...I am building my own stand.

I know many will say get the 220 and just drill it myself, and while that sounds great, I honestly don't think I have the "stones" to do it. :uhoh:

So I guess my question is what kind of canister setup would it take to filter the 220? How many? What kind?

...and do you think I could expand my stocklist if I went with the 220?

footprints: 180gal-72"x24"x24"
220gal-72"x24"x30"

...now that I look at it, all the 220 does is add height so I guess my stocklist will just stay with what I posted.

...thanks for your suggestions and advice.

I didn't realize the synspilum get so big, so I might look for something other than them. Suggestions for another 10" or under SA cichlid that would work??

I'd go with a true parrot hoplarchus psittacus for the last tank mate and the 180gallon. The 220 would be nice if you could get it drilled but I probably wouldn't drill it if I were you either. Run a sump it will be best for big fish + big bio load. Rena xp5's are a good addition to any monster tank also and you can usually get them for pretty cheap online/ebay.
