New tank stocking ideas, Polys with Dats? Or other combos?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ugh silver dollars. Its times like these we need a dislike button :lipsseale :lipsseale:

Oh i totally agree. Infact they are the only fish i outright hate.

Perhaps go with a smaller growing variety. Spotted or Tiger stripes SD. They seem to be more tolerable and less physco than their larger counterparts.

I had a small group of them and they were still a wild pack of buttholes

lol, SD’s are a love hate thing for sure. I loved the movement of the school of red hooks but I hated getting hosed everytime I fed them.

I have a local store that has some nice spotted ones in stock that are at the size where they should not get eaten. Who knows? Maybe? lol

Most datnoids will work with polys. Keep in mind silver dats need some brackish water even though they are placed in freshwater.

Been doing some reading on this... some have success doing full fresh. Any thoughts on a silver in full fresh?

I think it’ll be successful but some need some amount of salt. Can’t say a percentage. Viktor has a silver but developed skin probs. I forgot how long it had it but it was a while. He eventually moved it. For sure all silvers are wild and from brackish waters. Might move in and out but end in brackish water.

Ive seen a few say they tend to have a white fungus issue when kept in fresh. Was just curious to hear some more thoughts on it.

I’m on my second Silver Datnoid in full fresh. Current one I measured out of water is 9.5” . Not many are a foot in size. Therefore, consider it a challenge.

Yea. Skin gets friable and opens a bit and fungus gets through.

Shoot. I missed the fungus part. Yes, they’ll get it when damage occurs. Such as another fish picks on them. Most Dat species will get it on their dorsal spines when damaged. Silver Dats get it the easiest.
