new tank, unusual problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The resin from the smoke has probably leeched very deep into that Oak stand. A good sealant might be able to cover it up, if you want to take the time to re-do the stand.

Your best bet would to just build a new stand. The glass tank should come clean with some cleansers.. I can almost guarantee you it's the wood.

go to your local hardware store... get a sander... use 180 towards 220 grade. after you have done that clean it without any saw dust... buy a stain and sealer. apply it using cloth twice. but let it dry for the 1st on before you do the second. they get a gloss spray can. apply twice to 3x interval of 6 hours. your temp should be at least 60 F higher the better. it should do the trick in removing the smell. use mask in doing this project on the stand and keep your albuterol handy if you get asthma attacks. don't just paint and sand the outside do the inside of the stand to. Sanding the inside is not as important at the outside. 220 grade will make the wood very smooth. you might just want the 180 or a little bit lower for the inside.

thank you, all of you. I do have a smaller tank I can move the fish to temporarily. I am trying not to lose the biological filtration of the wet/dry- I suppose I could hook it up to another tank.....

I figured it was the wood. It is a nice, solid wood stand, so I'll try the sanding and varnishing first, before building or buying a new one.

thanks, again!

The quickest way is a new stand. If that is not an option then I would set the tank up on the floor as suggested and refinish the old stand. Of course then you have old paint and varnish smells to deal with. Good luck.

too much work i would just leave the stand outside for a week and hope it airs out
