new tank......want more fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would be more concerned with the butis eating my mollies instead of the archers, though I wouldn't put it past the archers to eat them if possible. How big are the archers?

I ask about the mollies' colors because chromides could squabble with fish of similar coloration.

Since I'm generally ignorant of most things brackish, forgive me if this is a silly suggestion. While I know they generally grow rather large, would it be out of the question to ad a dragon/violet goby to the mix?

my archers are all 6inchs and my butis is almost 5inch. my biggest male molly is about 3.5-4inchs. yea i figured the chromides would fight with the molly and that is not something that i want to have happen. so i had a violet goby before and i loved him but it was hard to get him to eat. they are slow to eat and they love to take their time and with the fish i have food is gone as soon as it hits the water. so i target fed the one i had up until he died. i am hesitant to get a new one because i really like the idea of a figure 8 puffer fish and chances are the puffer would chew the goby into pieces. but it was not a silly suggestion at all. so thank you for the input.

What is the max size of a Figure Eight Puffer? I believe the guys like their water below SG1.010 and preferably around SG1.005. Could more mollies be somewhere in line with filling your tank. I believe the knight goby might limit you on your high salinity fish.

If Figure Eight Puffers get large enough not to fit in anyfish's throat, you might try it. I would recommend more mollies and a puffer big enough your B. butis will not ambush. With plenty of hiding places below and rising decor enough to slalom throughout the tank, there may be room for one in your tank. I'm reaching out here, but you may include toys for a puffer. Maybe some of the puffer people here can advise you better

Green chromides (Etroplus suratensus) get larger than the orange chromides (E maculatus), up to about 1ft, albeit slowly, are generally vegetarian, tolerate varying salinites and are not in my experience, squabblers.

well I would be most afraid of your archers and butis eating your knight goby, so don't be surprised if they turn up missing once that butis gets to 6 inches. You have a medium brackish tank so I would suggest a dragon goby and if you can find them those green chromides are sexy. Monos can get big, one would not be a problem though, but monos like to stay in groups, you could try one though (never get only 2, eventually one will harass the other do death). If you can find adult orange chromides they will be fine, they are thick bodied so the archers will not be able to swallow them. Figure 8 puffer could work btw, they are hit or miss so if he becomes too much of an issue then bring him back to store.

thanks for all the input. i decided to try the figure 8 puffer. and so far he is doing great. the butis and the archer do not bother him at all. my male molly harassed him for a short time but he seems to be over that now. i changed my rock layout to give him plenty of places to explore. and i also started to breed pong snails to feed him. i'll keep everyone posted on how he is doing. but so far he is great. very active and always puttering around the tank.
