New tank, what order to add fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm also adding 1 Uaru. I heard that they are more interactive then Oscars. Any thoughts?

With the size of your tank, the FX and sump, you should have enough filtration to get away with heavy stocking.
This site should be able to provide you an approx idea on your stocking levels as well as filtration.

Back to your tank, you will just have to monitor regularly for crazy aggression. If a cichlid goes over the top, he will have to be removed.

As for the catfish, get what you like and give them some hiding spots. As long as they are not tiny & cant be swallowed, cichlids usually leave them alone. Also remember that as long as you feed the catfish well, they also grow very quickly, so its not like your Oscar will grow and Cat will stay the same size.

Uaru should be fine, as for "more interactive than Oscars", I don't think you can make such a generalized statement. Some Oscars are very interactive, at least in the way that cichlids can be. Unless the Uaru gets out of the tank and plays chess with you, not sure how much more interactive it could be :)

How do you know the Uaru won't play chess with me? but saying it will get out the tank is taking it a little far lol :p.

Don't get me wrong, I work with fish and Oscar's are my number 1 guys. You couldn't even me to swap them for any saltwater fish. I have just seen on a few vids and posts that Uaru's are "more interactive". I must admit it would take a lot to really make me a believer :-)

hah, pics or it didn't happen!
but yeah, uaru are great fish as well, I would say both are very interactive

Most Cichlids are interactive as long as the owner has regular interaction with them.
The larger cichlids are more confident & aggressive and hence usually more interactive, than smaller one's.
