I just got my first tank. I know its only a 10 gallon, but you gotta start somewhere. I set it up and let it run for a couple days, then last night i got one of my fellow MFKs filter sponges to get the cycle started. How soon should I add fish and what do you think I should start with. I was thinking either some tetras to make sure everything is ok, or just dive right in with some blue rams. Let me know.:headbang2

WOOHH a fellow ND member!

Welcome!

I would go for a convict in a 10g to start off with. The blue rams are a bit flaky, especially with most of ND's HARD water.

good point about the rams, but one question. If the lfs can keep them with the same water i have won't they be alright? I've heard they can be difficult to keep, but i think they are awesome to look at. thanks for the replys!

Rams usually don't do too well in new set-ups. Get your tetras - about 6 1"ers to start - and let them get all comfy.

If you have established filter media, don't wait to put some fish in. The beneficial bacteria will starve if there is no ammonia source.

Are you by chance in Fargo?

Also, its worth a shot to get the rams if you want, a bit cheaper of a solution would be some bolivian rams. I actually had decent luck with them but they would never breed.

I would go with jvision's plan. And if it's rams you really want then go with them. If not have a look and see what other people keep in 10g's.

I'm in Grand Forks.

Thanks for all the info. So if i get the tetras how long before i could add other fish?

BTW this site is awesome!

Get fish right away if you have seeded media.
Especially since its your first tank, stock lightly and add some really low maintenance plants
Good luck!:D

Hey nukeman WELCOME to MFK I too started with a 10, upgraded to a 40, then 60, 100, now currently 120 all this in about a year. I always seem to tell myself that I'm done for now but already I find my self slowly making space for a 150-180gal....just gotta get past my girl..

Anyway; again Welcome to MFK!!!! post up those pics.
