if it is your first tank and only 10g i would start with some zebra danios they are schooling fish and very hardy a great choice for a first fish. I would recomend letting the tank run for a total of 4 or 5 days i dont know how long its been running for already. Then i would add 6 Zebra Danios. Wait 2 or 3 weeks before adding more fish. After that its your choice just make sure what you pick is compatiable

I wouldn't pack many fish into a 10gal. at any rate. Very little water volume there. To do so could quickly overrun the filtration. 4-6 small fish is enough. A manageable number in a tiny tank. No use risking fish die offs while you are learning. That would only be discouraging. Welcome to the addiction, er, I mean hobby! 
do some neon tetras while your tank is brand new then after a while you could add some rams.
get an HOB filter in addition to that sponge filter.
