New TATF!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just read it...and i have 2 tinfoils already tat came with the purchase...wen i throw in the shrimp the atf follows the barbs as they eat and most of the time he schools with them....u wud figure he would eventually catch on but its been a couple days since the tinfoils have been going after the shrimp and he still hasnt taken a clue to it...i guess ill try some floating pellets after i buy some since all i have is massivore but if he doesnt even take shrimp which was his previous diet, i highly doubt he'll take the pellets

Dont make the mistake i did with the massivore pellets, i was really close to getting my vaft to eat pellets but i used the wrong kind. Massivore is way to hard, the first time he bit he spat it out immediately and never wanted to touch pellets again. Probably scared him for life, didnt even look at

Give it time. I've never gotten an ATF to eat any sinking food. Just my experience though. I like the floating pellets because the TFBs make a ruckus when they eat from the surface and it never fails to get the ATF's attention. With how your fish is older and larger, I'd give him 2-3 weeks at most before caving and giving him feeders. If he's already following the shrimp I'd call that a very good sign. If you want, you could give him a week or two to come around. He might just need to settle in.

Keep in mind that ATF are both extremely stubborn and extremely good at waiting out starvation periods. They have a fairly slow metabolism. Even a brand new 3"er can go a week and a half without eating without having any undue stress. Combine that with their extreme dislike for changing their habits, and you have all the makings for a hard fish to break.

I can understand how massivores are def a different texture and may therefor be harder and less likeable, however I have an overflow/sump system in both tanks with lots of current, so any floating pellet not eaten immediately becomes sucked in and then becomes a pollution nightmare .... and ATF's are not like oscars and don't suck up 30 pellets in 10 seconds, they strike with a lot of thought, and only for 1 at a time, so massivores made more sense for me cause they eat them off the sand no problem ..... that being said, it was a pain in the butt, but all my ATF's eat massivores now ..... I also waited a year plus before pellet training, so that probably didn't help .... the earlier, the better has seemed to work well with pellet training for me

I have my ATF on the hikari carnivore sinking pellets which have the same sponge like taste as the floating ones. Apparently massivore is the same ingredients, so wouldn't the ATF like then the same amount?

Its the texture .... ingredients are nearly the same, however hikari jumbo carnisticks have air in them, and soften almost immediately when they hit water .... massivores do soften, but it takes like 10-20 mins of soaking and if your fish don't eat pellets within 10 mins your overfeeding, thus when the fish eats the massivore it is much harder texture wise than the carni stick

Yup. And unlike catfish, cichlids and other suction feeders, an ATF actually bites his food. If he he wants to eat and bites something that he's not sure about and that thing feels like he's biting a pebble that hurts his teeth, he's unlikely to try to eat it again. This is why the soft pellets like carnisticks are so important: when the ATF sinks his teeth into it, it feels like biting a fish and to him, it feels right.
