New Tegu :3

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pardon me for being a noob but i've been wondering this for a long time. What's the difference between a tegu and a monitor lizard? They are always being compared for which species is better.

Whats the setup like?

This is the cage it's in to get some size on it. It's 55x30x30 inches, once the house is remodeled here in about a month or two I'm pretty sure that whole closet will be his new home (it's roughly 10x5 so I can put a monster tank in there). Picked up cypress mulch and a powersun lamp as well. I feel silly for never using those expensive mercury bulbs but with both uvb/uva in the same bulb and a 1 year warranty I don't see how you can go wrong. This 'organic' cypress mulch I bought gets super heated and seems to not have any bugs or pests as a result, buy it local here at like $5 a bag. This lizard seems to be growing a little bigger every day...

Tegus tend to be smaller and fatter whereas monitors are longer and slimmer. Tegus are also only found in South America whereas monitors are everywhere else. There's definitely more differences but those are just the differences I've noticed visually.

Wow growing fast!

Beautiful, had one myself. Not sure if you know this already or not (dont mean to offend) but they need to bury.. and they will escape in a heart attack.....they are fast as lightening *LOL* just some of my own lessons learned

Pretty cool, I had one like 10 years ago, very cool lizard gets to a good size and fun to feed. Enjoy pretty cool you can go get one from your backyard, had a pay a pretty penny for mine.

No worries! I've got a good 6 inches of cypress mulch in there in some spots. I bought a wooden hide as well. Mine seems super lazy I've not seen it be fast once, yet. XD The orange colors are creeping up on its head too. I can't wait to find out if its a boy or girl. I think it's too small to tell just yet, its at 19 inches right now.

I actually did buy it but at a very low cost, the guys name is John and he sells them on kingsnake sometimes. It's kinda cool because it helps the environment by removing them but it also saves the tegus from being destroyed if animal control were to get them instead. Very nice fellow and he had all very healthy looking specimens. Mine has some battle scars from being a wild lizard but it just adds to the personality.
