New to African Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My mbuna love playing in front of my powerheads too, but it is a good idea to leave them plenty of room to rest. As for the salt they definitely aren't brackish fish although they do prefer hard water with a higher pH. Instead of adding a rift lake buffer regularly you would be better off just acclimating them to your waters natural parameters. That way they won't be subjected to swings in water parameters regularly.

for the raise in ph..use limestone instead of buffers..like Texas holey rock. and ill stick to my guns on not having too much current. its alright to have some since you will have over 800 gph going anyways.. just my own experience and from what I've read. really your tank, your fish, do what ya want. lol

Thanks guys! I appreciate your input. I'll hold off on the wavemaker for now. For one, they're all so tiny that when I installed the canister yesterday on top of the 2 HOBs, I did notice that they seem to be 'dancing' lol. I think I may already have some limestones though...Not sure but the rocks in my tank looks like one. I'll take a pic later and post it. Maybe you guys can help me identify?

Finally got the chance to take some pic/vid of the tank.

The babies are finally more outgoing and actually following a person's hand when it comes near the tank lol. My mom is definitely loving these little guys. And I think the rocks I have are indeed limestones because I noticed that my pH was 7.6!

Thanks for all your help. :)
