I have been contemplating getting an aro for about a year but have not jumped in yet. Mainly because I can't find a black aro locally and am a little scared to risk shipping on a $200 fish.

My tank is 220g with

psittacus
oscar
severum
geo's

Would a black aro even work in my setup? I don't think my tank is large enough for a silver and everything I've read said that Jardini are way too aggressive for my tank. Am I living in a dream world thinking about black aro's? Or should I bite the bullit and order a young one?

if i can remember correctly i have heard that silvers need a 240 for min tank and i have heard that black arows get smaller..... What are the demensions.

Rule of thumb regarding arowana tank size. The arowana should be kept in a tank that is 3x the aro's length and have a width/depth equal to the aro's length. So with that said you tank is good for about a 24" aro. With a silver or black aro you could cheat a little and go 26 0r 27". Being that both aros grow bigger, eventually you will be looking to upgrade tank size or re-home the arowana.

Regarding the aro and your tankmates. Baby aros are very fragile and should be kept solitary up to about 5~6". At that size tankmates need be chosen carefully. Keeping aros with cichlids is fine though the aro should be at least 10" long and 2x the length of the cichlids.

ok so its 2 feet wide i think ull be fine if u get one i dont think i have seen one get over 2 feet long and they are a lot like slivers and are very flexable...... i say u go for it and see if u can grow a monster and if u do u got a few years before u even have to think about upgradeing...... if u get from the right vendor u dont need to worry about shiping because they are pros and package stuff very well....

Just becusae you haven't seen a black over 24" means very little. There are two examples of 30"+ black aros in this current thread How much it worth?

You will be ok with a silver Its not gonna get 2 ft over night. I had a 26" in a 300 that was only 2 ft. wide for 3 1/2 years It would look good with your list of fish

that tank should be fine for a black for at least 2 yeats and check Rich he sells black with barbels for 120,great fish, saw them in person

Thanks for everyones help. So from what you guys have told me a black aro is probably my best bet to be kept with my tank mates and will be able to be kept in my tank the longest. I think I am going to order one from infinate aquatics. It will be 8-10 inches according to the listing.

Here's my new questions. Sorry, there's a lot of questions. But I want to do this right!!!

Should I add the new black aro directly to my 220g tank with my large cichlids or should I add it to my 72g discus tank for a little while until I know it's eating and adjusted to my water? My 220 has some large fish but they have never been agressive or tried to eat any other added tank mates. Plus they also never are more then halfway up the tank except at feeding time.

My 220g also has some small grow out fish that are around 2.5 inches. They are geo's that stay at the bottom. Do I need to move them to a different tank for fear of them getting eaten?

What should I expect upon the aro's arrival? Should it eat soon or is this going to take a few days? What foods should I have ready for it? I feed a wide range of pellets and frozen foods to all my tanks. Do I need anything else for my new aro?

How many years will a 8-10 inch black aro be OK in my tank? So how long will it take it to reach 26-27 inches? At that point I will either half to upgrade my tank or sell/trade the fish for another young one.

What size are your cichlids? Recommend that the aro be 2x as long as the cichlids. Assuming your 72g is a 48" bowfront, I would say you could grow your black aro in that tank up to about 15 or 16".

Not likely, but if it will fit into the arowanas mouth it could become food.

I have had aros not eat for 3 weeks and Ive also had an aro eat within an hour of being placed in the tank. If it doesn't eat, don't panic be aware it could take a long while to eat. There is a good sticky on arowana feeding, check it out.

Seems to me for what I've seen here on MFK blacks grow a little slower then silvers. You should still expect about an inch per month. Myself I have had two blacks. One grew quickly from under 3" to 9" in about 4 months. The other, she may be the slowest growing aro ever. She has only grown about 8~9" in the 25 months I've had her, she is now at 19". To answer your question, really IDK. I would say 2 to 3 years at least, but it could be longer or possibly even sooner.
