Hey guys, Im picking up an arowana that I found that is finally a good size to keep with my redtail catfish. I was wondering if there is anything specific I should look for in the fish when I pick it up to make sure it is good and healthy... The lfs said he is in great shape and is eating for them like a champ, he is on goldfish... Im hoping to convert him over to floating pellets but i dont think thats gonna be easy.... Any suggestions?

i never had experienced that aro will like eating dead foods..try make some research in the website..because i feed my asian aro with crickets and mealworms..sometimes small goldfish..

What type of arow is it and how big exactly?

It probably will be difficult to get it on pellets and other foods but not impossible.

How big is your tank?

Getting a lovely little silver arowana... probably right around 6 inches... Its going to be in a 90 gallons for a little bit till we make the final big tank purchase... I know 90 is small and wont hold it for long... but like I said we are inthe market for a larger tank

hi chooders.. welcome to mfk.. all the best with your aro.. before you pick up the aro jus have a look to see if there are any missing scales or ripped fins and if the fish is swimming around well..

once you move the aro to your tank you might have wait a day or two(some mfkers have cited more) for it to get acclimated to the new environment..

RTCs my friend are pure joy and evil.. jus for an example.. i had my 3" baby RTC with 1.5" baby oscars and the RTC actually ate one of them.. RTCs grow like crazy.. its barely been 3 months and my RTC put on 8"(is 11" now) so do be careful with this mix.. i would really recommend separate tanks until they get to be about 12"..

as far as food is concerned hikari tropical food sticks are great.. dont expect your aro to take to it immediately.. there is this sticky http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=329584 by sbuse.. it gives you loads of info on what to feed at what size..

i'm sure you've done a lot of reading before you made the decision to buy an aro.. all the best again.. put up some pics if you can.. cheers..

thanks for the info guys... and yes i have read much on the arowana and my redtail before i purchased both... its just good to know that there are so many experts and great people on this site that i can reference with problems and concerns as well to great stories of awesome beautiful kept fish.... as soon as the aro gets used to the tank ill make sure to post pictures.... ;)

Nice aro, make sure you top is well sealed and weighted down so your aro don't end up on the floor.

He is still pretty small but I am not underestimating his jumping abilities... so i do have a pretty heavy solid hood and some corner decor to help keep it down... so should be alright... thanks
