New to Aros

I'd feel a little nervous putting a silver aro with an rtc. The rtc would outgrow the aro and you'd come home one day to a fat rtc (even if it seemed like it wasn't big enough to attempt to eat the aro).

Also, it will be a bit hard to convert it off live food, but it can be done. It just takes a little patience. You basically have to starve them, but be careful not to do it too long. It took me about a week and a half of no food to get mine on pellets back when he was about the same size as yours.

Just remember to have a completely covered, weighed down top, keep up with water changes, and you're good to go.

The rtc out growing your silver and having him for a snack is what concerns me. I also agree with Bderick67 on the aro jumping. I have lost one to this. I had the tank sealed so I thought. The 4" silver jumped out of a spot that looked impossible for him to fit through. Nice looking aro!!!!

thanks for all the advice guys... the tanks top is pretty sealed... i have been watching videos on youtube of them jumping... i know they are crazy jumpers... called the monkey fish... so i know what they are capable of... and as for the redtail, i have a small cory cat that is still in the tank and he has not ate that yet... i keep him well fed and the aro is much bigger than the red tail... so im keeping a good eye on the situation...

in a large tank, there is no problem with the RTC ( they will hardly meet, swimming at different levels )

Conversion to pellets is done through starvation. It helps if you have some fish that eat on the surface so that the aro learns that pellets are food.

Once it picks the pelletes up and spits them out, you have 75% of the job done.

You have to study what can make the aro nervous and jumpy. Some are afraid of one thing, some of the other, some of nothing. Thread carefully, untill you two know each other.

And, last, the jumping issue is a very real one. They jump through a needle thread, so don't cut corners on that tank sealing issue.

u wanna give him pellets ?
then don't feed him anything for 2~3 days .
aft that put the pellet on the water ,
and he's sure to eat it (:

You must be referring to Live Pellets, those that swim, surely....

In my experience, Silver aros can be spooked pretty easy. Some are spooked by certain colors--red for instance. Often when an aro is settling in, just walking up to the tank will spook them. I calmed mine down quite a bit by placing the tank in a high traffic area to get them used to people walking by. They still get a little spooked when I turn the lights on. Don't ever under estimate there vision either--if they see a crack to escape they may try.
Miguel is correct on the pellet training. If you get them to spit them out than you are on the way. Depending on how big your aro is, you may want to break the pellets in half.. I've had luck with hikari arosticks and breaking them up. After a while my silvers have become great eaters--they accept anything offered to them(My jardini is a different story..lol).

good luck and keep us posted,
Chris
