New to Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought my black aro when he was 4" and he got onto pellet in no time and somehow he wont even take market prawn when i put em in. And i never tried live feeders before due to dangers pointed out by everyone here.

Mine silvers and jardinies would spit out new food too. That's good that he takes/tastes it. Fast him a bit and he will eat it. Do not give him a choice: live and dead side by side but fast him. My two jardinies loved anything meaty: fish pieces, shrimp, mussels, octopus, crab, etc. Ignored the pellets but I never tried hard to get them to take the pellets. They have an excellent vision. As soon as food hits the water, mine would grab it with a lighting speed (there is competition from tank mates too).

If I am going to be feeding them shrimp and any other sea food are they okay to buy at any seafood store and drop in? Do I need to get pellets and such specific specifically for arowana or are any ok? Is there any specific type of ingredients to use or avoid?

***Yep. I buy frozen. Thaw and drop in. Needless to say, cut in sizes they can swallow, otherwise they will spit out. Freezing kills all parasites (does not kill bacteria but it's usually ok)

*** Different people will say differently. I think any are ok. My silver aros went for all kinds of pellets - catfish, koi, gamefish pellets and have been fine.

Is there any specific type of ingredients to use or avoid?
***Make sure the foods are whole and uncooked, unseasoned, unsalted, etc. No spices. Just came from the ocean and frozen.

I have just brought a silver arowana (about 25cm) about a week ago and so far refuses to eat anything have tried live food and shrimp pellets etc any ideas?

I had the same problem with my silver. It took a month before he started to eat. I bought a veggie clips and hanged some market shrimp from the lid. I notice when I turn off the lights and hid he went for it:)

I have two baby jardini's one was harder to get to eat pellets than the other. One week without eating and these guys were attacking bubbles! So I tried breaking off a piece of pellet and stuff it into the small piece of silverside once it thawed out and put it in the water. One ate it right away the other one didnt, but he came around a few days later. They still eat live once a week, but now they eat frozen foods, pellets and worms!

Heloo, This is an asian breeder... I have 7 years of exp keeping these wonderful fishes...

I would say a good food for your arow can be market shrinmp or krill... they will less struggle to have this food. And dont need not to feed for few days... usually a 5 inch arowana use to be hungry more quickly (if it is in peaceful condition)... what u can do is just wait one day then give the market shrinmp at night, if it didnt eat than wait another day and give it again. I should say if your water quality is OK and ur fish is already settled in your tank, then it will eat the shrinmp...

you should remember one thing, small arows like you have can be fed on guppies and as the aro grows one need to shift its food habit from guppy to other options. The biggest problem with guppy is that it can contain diseases and it is also fatty food. Fatty food for arowana can make Eye drop problem. However, you also not forget that, your arow will grow faster on these live foods. And people here (where i live) use guppy and other small fishes till the aro is 8 to 10 inch...:)

Feed your jar pellets.. if it wont eat..starve it for a day or two. goodluck on your first aro! keep us updated with pix!
