New to Bichir's. Need Advice.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
6 months and a Seng will be about 7" if fed well..I believe the Del's are similar in their growth, the first few months they grow fast!

Snails are a good companion for Bichirs IMO, I have Japanese trap doors in all my tanks now, and all my glass is cleaned for me about once a month now. They don't multiply like rabbits either, live bearers, just make sure that if you have soft water, that shells or something of this type are added for shell strength.

Plecos are nice, but tend to have a taste for slime coat, Chinese algae eaters are freak shows (IMO), so snails are about all thats left...

I don't have Algae eaten animals in any of my tanks and a magnet/glass scraper does fine for me. Algae eaters are a pseudo need IMO/IME you don't need them you only think you do....Using a magnet is alot easier as you dont have to plan for extra bioload....I have to agree unless you Have the full sized tank when the fish growout faster than you thought then you have to do more WC to keep nitrates down to keep them healthy....

My del went from 4"-7" in about 3 months (I got him in Oct. he is now 10") Believe me if you dont have the full long term tank set-up IME it becomes a huge stress trying to get everything set-up and keep the fish healthy

i have a 2 dels and one is 5" other is 6" and there in a 55 so i would wait on getting a del bichir intill u have a 55gal or bigger.

This might be difficult as I may be moving. Perhaps I should hold off on them until summer when I get a 55 gallon.
yeah i would.

So should I just put the new Bichir's in the 55 from the start? No need for them to be in a smaller tank even if they are near infancy?

if they are all that size then they should be fine.

Thanks. I might hold off on this project until I graduate then. Make sure I have enough funds to perhaps have a 100+ gallon tank with multiple Bichirs.
