New to breeding...$???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I say breed whatever you like. You don't have to make money, but as long as it helps to pay for your hobby.......... I had convicts, had fry in about a week.

once you get skilled enough, you could try discus fish.those things are like 30 bucks for a 2incher where im from, depending on the species you get

neither will make money. Find whatever is high priced/rare and there's where the money is at but there will also be a huge challenge. Breed cichla azul, dats, cichla azul, etc. But they require a larger commitment and more work.

I don't think anyone is spawning dats or azuls. I know some people spawn cichla, but I have heard very little about raising fry to decent selling size.(besides at farms) So more realistically, discus, calvus, and frontosa are fish that are in demand all the time. And all of them fetch a pretty good price. And they don't need a small pond to breed.

Yeah I don't think so either but what I mean't is for a fish that really sells for prime $$ right now that's what you're talking about. But then by the time you research it and make it a full time job trying to get them to spawn(if you can) it really isn't worth it from a hobbiest stand point.

Not many fish can be bred and sold and still make a profit in the end. Sure discus, fronts maybe(sooooo many people breeding fronts), but the big $$ is in what's not readily available yet.

Doing it for fun is.... well.... fun!

But for money is a different story. I'd like to see someone track not only the cost of their breeding stock and food, but water and electricity too!

I look at it as a way to defray the expenses of the hobby. Coming out ahead is a whole other thing.

windsurfer.

When I got into the fish hobby a few years ago a guy at mylfs store told me about a fish called a dwarf cockatoo cichlid. From what i understand it's kind of hard to breed these guys, but if you can you're likely to make at least a little money.

You should breed Platys. You will make thousands! Of platys....:(

Do you mean you're getting only 15-20 fry per brood?

yes that is my survival rate for the fish to about 6-7months old. this could be alot higher I think but I leave the fry with the parents for 4 weeks and also mix batches of fry with older ones so I lose some there too. Any how I end up with enough the feed my aro and occasionally take some to the LFS.
