New to canaster filters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My personal first choice on a tank that large would be a sump. But for canisters, I'd look at Fluval FX6 or Eheim 2262. The 2262 is more expensive, but more customizable. With either of them you may need to run two of them. Depending on your stock levels, you may be able to do something like a 2262 and an AC110.

Canisters are essentially a closed loop system. A sump will use an overflow of some sort in the main tank to drain into a sump tank under it and use a pump to return the water back up to the main tank. A sump can take far more planning in initial set up. But they are far more customizable, typically much easier to clean than a canister (takes me less than a minute to change out a filter sock about once a week), you can put equipment such as heaters in your sump rather than the main tank. Also many return pumps on the market these days are more efficient than canisters, and can also give you a higher turnover rate for larger tanks. The FX6 and 2262 are two of the larger cans on the market. They both are rated around 900 gph at the pump. After head pressure and whatnot, you'll probably be more like 5-600 gph.

Monsterfish I run several canisters on my 220. I run an ehiem 2262, a Fx-5 and three Aquaclear 110s. I have no dead spots in my tank with this set up.

Wtf?.....you guys use more watts for ur 210 and 220 then i do for my 600......dont do what these guys did unless u wanna waste $$$ .....go with a sump with a reliable pump.

To each there own brother, Sumps aren't for everyone. I for one enjoy my canisters as I don't like the overflows in the tank or the boxes in the tank (if not equipped with corner over flows).

If I was to set up a 180 and not use a sump for whatever reason, I'd go the route of a 2262 and an AC110. And would add a second AC110 if needed. The problem I have with multiple canisters is the time involved in cleaning them. AC110's are efficient and easy to clean. A sump, I spend 1-2 minutes a week to clean my mechanical filtration by replacing a sock. Doesn't get much easier than that lol. Just naturally the more often you clean your mechanical filtration the better your water quality will be. I know when I ran canisters I was letting the waste build up a lot longer than a week.
