new to cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
go the library or just take a hour or so and read on the net and do a search on south american cichlids...

First of all there are two main types of cichlids, and for the most part you shouldn't mix them until you know what you are doing. The two types are African cichlids and Central/South American cichlids (also known as new world cichlids).

The Central/South American cichlids are usually bigger and more aggresive. You probably wont find many that will fit in your 30 gallon.

List that is good for you.
Firemouth- gets to 6" long. you could fit a couple in yours. They are colorfull and awsome
Convict- 6" long. More common and not as colorful, but still cool.

List that is too big for you.
Jack Dempsey-
Discus-
Red Terror-
Flowerhorn-
Blood Parrot-
Texas-
Green Terror-

The African cichlids are sometimes more colorful and smaller. These are territorial but not as agressive as the other mentioned above.

This will give you a good start. Check this out on google. Do a little research and ask some more questions.

Sounds like you need to do a bit of reading up on the hobby and fishes in general.
Here's a place you can start. If you're really interested in getting involved in this hobby it is worth the read.

http://fishprofiles.com/profiles/list.aspx?category=5 look on left side for small pictures. if you find one you like, click the link next to it to see the profile of that fish. generally, if the max size is greater then 7 in. you can't have it in your 29 gallon tank.

please show us which ones you like and we can help you out more.

:D You've got a lot of good advice to start with but you need to do some reading. Look up South american and central american cichlids and you'll be able to find some you like. Personally I'd never put a firemouth in a 30 gallon tank.

When your planning what you want to have make sure it can spend its entire life in your tank unless you're absolutely sure you can afford a bigger. properly sized tank for the species you choose. Take into account agression, compatibility with other species, water requirements and natural habitat.

A little homework will save you tons of time, MONEY, and headaches. Learn first before you buy anything. You will be caring for these fish for their entire lives which in some cases can exceed 10 years.

If you're going with a 30 gallon 36" tank. I'd start looking at dwarf cichlids such as kribensis, and apistogramma. They will teach you a lot about cichlid behavior, and to your benefit, fish keeping responsibilities in general. Water changes, filtration requirements, etc etc...

God I'm starting to ramble on...

Bottom line is LEARN FIRST, then buy

GOOD LUCK and welcome to the hobby and to our forum!! :headbang2
