does this sound like a good set up
55 gallon
2 discus
cardinal tetras (how many should I put in?)
2 bolivian rams
and I need advice on a good algae eater

really that many? , I thought they needed a large tank.

8-12 cardinals would do well and school a lot. For an algae eater i would go with a bristlenose pleco. They stay reasonably small for plecos and are great algae eaters. Good luck with the tank.

ive had up to 9 discus in a 55 before..of course i was doing a water change every other day. just depends on the size of the discus too. if they start getting big just set up another tank! lol

No, not IMO. I would use 6 discus, and nothing else.

Two discus is fine if you get a mated pair, but if not the dominant one will harrass the other.

It's generally advisable to have at least 5 in a group. I wouldn't get more than 5-6 in a 55gal, and that's without tankmates. You could have tankmates if you plan on hoping for a mated pair and selling off the "spares" before adulthood.

I wouldn't do bolivian rams. They come from southern brazil and don't enjoy the elevated temps that discus and cardinals do.

I used to have 10 discus fishes varies in sizes, 4 clown loaches, and two adult Angels in my last 55g tank for sometimes. Just recently transferred everyone into their new bigger 125g home. I am sure everyone is happy in their new home now.

Yeah I agree mostly with the other posters. 5 discus maximum, about 10 cardinals, but no Rams. Mabye some Apistogrammas instead, like A.elizibethe, found in the rio icana with the Red Discus and the Cardinal Tetra. If you wanted to extend with the biotope theme go with some Peppermint Bristle Nose, or some Corydoras, like C.sp "orange neon".
