i have a 40 gal tank and want to put discus in her..how do i start? what kind of water? chemicals? n e thing would help..i have heater and a Penguin BIO-Wheel Power Filter..the water in dubuque ia is not very hard. if i just run the water through the filter for a few weeks is it good?

start off by getting a bigger tank.
cycle your system
ph 6.5-7.2
less chemicals you use the better. just prime and ph buffer.
i have a 300 wat marineland heater in my 55g

and make sure you do LOTS of water changes

best of luck,

so is a 40 gal. to small? only thinking 3 to 4 fish..once tank is cycled and good ph levels its good to go? with water changes can i just use tap water? sorry if i sound dumb its just my first time.

A 55 would be good for about 6 fish. If your gonna start with juvies you can raise them in the 40 but i wouldnt suggest starting with juvies. Water changes are just another thing with discus, i do 70% every other day. I dont use any chemicals or any of that crap. Just clean water. Filtration is basically the more the marrier and they dont enjoy lots of current.

tap waters fine. make sure you check ALL of your water parameters before you put them in. and for 3 or 4 fish its fine but discus are social creatures and like to be in groups always keep 6 or more. with 3 or 4 fish your most likely going to have aggression problems.

I think 40g is a little small long term. I think a better number is 5-7 discus in at least a 65-75g tank. I'm new to discus, but I have noticed they like being in groups, and feel more comfortable when they're in larger numbers.

they are awsome fish. theres no fish more beautiful than them(freshwater)

and i dont think there hard to keep. there just like any other fish. you have to give them living conditions where they are comfortable in.
