new to discus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the biggest difference between discus and most other fish is that if you slack off on your tank, they are less forgiving. young discus are a lot of work and your tank is too small for adults. why not try angels? they are happy in groups of 3 or 4. if your going to try them anyway, then do your research. there are old myths and some bad/wrong info on the net. ask before you do something, or you'll end up with at best stunted, sickly looking fish.

omg I to live in dubuque. I Keep 6 discus 4 angels two stupid gold fish and two teacup stingrays in my home made 180 all glass aquarium. I run a canister filter for 200 gallons and have a external heater. They are right the biger the tank the better. For fish go to Roe Aquarium in Rock island, teski in moline, and aquatic adventurs on kimberly across from chuky chese in davenport. They also have discus at coralville bay but they are way over priced.

This is a list of what I would do:
55G barebottom
Heater
feed beefheart mix
at least 90% water changes over 2 days
prefilter sponge on any HOB
5-6 3' discus

No need to mess with the PH such as ph/discus buffer. Just remember a stable PH is the best ph. Juvies love lots of food and lots of clean water. The bigger discus you get the less complications you'll have as a novice.
