I live in the UK and currently have a 10x2x2 set up as Amazon / american tank with Cichlids / cats ect. Im thinking of changing stock and going planted and Discus. Just looking for some tips really

- Decor
- General Discus keeping
- water quality
- oh and can you keep clown loaches with Discus..

Cheers in advance for the help.

decore doesnt matter if theyre adults if juvie bare bottom
clean water
clean water
no on clown loaches

ok, how about L-Numbers. Ive got a Royal and Green Phantom Plec's. both about 4"

not experience with L# since theyre pointless in a discus tank when youre doing as much wc as you should be. but with anyy pleco its a hit and miss. foreest uses a HUGE 12"+ albino pleco in his tank while others will find their smaller ones latching on to the discus.

maybe someone with more experince in L# can help. i know that BN are really recomended

Just depends on the person. I've seen discus tanks with the usual to bare bottom. Personally I find that a barebottom is easier to clean with the amount of water changes I do.

- General Discus
Three two things a discus needs to obtain maximum growth if you're growing out juvies. Water quality and lots of feedings. Juvies have small stomachs and need multiple feedings.

- water quality
Water quality plays a major part in growing out. Many people do daily water changes with juvies.

Depends on the attitude of both fish. I know one guy who has four 4" clown loaches with six adult discus in a 110Gallon.

But I would recommend beginners to purchase 4" fish to get some experience under their belt. You stand less of a chance of screwing something up with a fish of that size.

base on how big they get the clown loaches tends to bother the discus. of course theres always an exception but as for a begginer i tend to recomend the basics

before you do anything you should read up on what it takes to keep discus. as already stated, if want juvies, then a bare bottom tank will be best, along with many feedings and wc's. much less work to get fish at least 4". adults are no harder to keep than any other fish. there is a lot of old myths and beliefs that lead people to believe that discus are near impossible to keep. some plecos are fine and some will suck the slime coat off the discus. bn's are generally safe, but will crap more than the other fish combinded. loaches are safe but I think a tank looks better with fish from the same part of the world.

I agree on simplydiscus.com. you will find any and all the info about domestic or wild discus that you need. one more tip. it's rare to find quality discus at your lfs.

...and how long it will take for the clown's to get that big. I've been having 4x CL's (3.5"-4.5") with my discus for almost a year now with nothing but happiness and they even feed side by side.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Ive been researching for a while as I never rush into anything when it comes to fish.

- as for the bare-bottom tank, they are going in my show tank so I want to plant it all out. I will go for bigger adults then as I dont want a plain tank in my front room.

- Ive found a few breeders in the uk not a vast distance from me, maybe 2-3 hours drive so once the time comes I will take a day out and go see what they have, talk to the guy ect

- Becasue my tank is so big I will prob do frequent smaller water changes then to help with the growth, I usually do all my tanks regular anyway.
