Smallies are really easy to keep. I have one at the current time. When I started with him he would only eat live food, mostly worms. But after a week or so I was able to switch him over to dried blood worms. He was very resistant to pellets for months but in about the past week has started eating them. One thing he goes nuts for is frozen blood worms. They have a lot of personality and he comes alive when i come into the room as he always thinks i'm going to feed him. Right now my guy is about 2-3". The one piece of advice I'd have for you is try to keep them the same size. As the bigger one will inevitably pick on the small one and if the size difference is to great the bigger one will try to eat the smaller one.

few things from my experience with bass. first, right or wrong, small mouth bass prefer cold water deeper water and darker water than LMB? ive had LMB and they would jump out of my tank quite often(before i got SOLID covers) i used to watch them watch a fly or mosquito fly by and one would always jump out of the tank after it. very strong fish and great hunters. enjoy just be sure as always to do your homework before diving in

The fact that you can find them in streams and creeks contradicts the deeper water point. I do think they prefer swifter movement in the water, just from a fishermans perspective.

You sir have hit the nail right on the head. LMB are as lazy as they come in hunting. As a fisherman you know that you have to darn near tickle a LMB in the wild with your lure or bait to get them to hit. A smallmouth is 100x more active of a hunter then the LMB. It will chase food a distance and like others have said will defend their territory against darn near anything!
