OK! LET'S DO SOME MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATH!!!! *pauses for standing ovation*

SO...if a worm is 60% protein, and protein is 3.75 calories per gram, and the average earthworm is about 3 grams...then...(3.75 * 3) *.6 = about 6.75 calories per worm. I would believe that a "safe" calculation for energy needed is about 15x the body weight of the eel. So if he weighs 5 lbs., then he would need approximately 75 calories a day...now worms contain starches and sugars that will bump up their calorie number a bit...and let's assume about 50-100 calories a day due to either activity or non-activity...so! a 5 lb. eel should be easily sustained on 7-9 large worms a day. BOOM. *slams microphone, walks off stage*

:clap

Good growth u got there... That's awesome infact.... I have a 8-10 incher with me... I got some monster sized earthworms and threw them in the small bin with compost and I keep it moist and feed them waste veggies... Hardly takes any space n time.... And occasionally I replenish the stock.... My fire is growing well and healthy... I just rinse the worm an feed... Any nutrients is indirectly fed.... Some of the worms are 10" plus in there....ImageUploadedByMonsterAquariaNetwork1352088258.583545.jpg

That seems very simple! Does it smell? Do you keep the bucket outside, how warm before the worms start dyeing. I live in a very very hot part of the world and I think the worms would die if I left them outside and I think I would die (angry wife unit) If I kept the worms inside :)

Hahahahahah beware of the WIFE UNIT!
Naaa absolutely no smell and the temps are around 29-31 here very humid too.... Leaving it out would dry out the compost and thus result in no luck.... Just keep it moist... A clay plate or a clay tile gives them worms a hideout and also easier to pick them for feeds as they are almost all the time under that.... And it is in my fish room which is indoor...

Thank you. Good info

I go through about 80 large worms a week. think I whould need a army of worms to start to be able to keep up with demand. I had thought of rehoming 1 of them but they are my favorite fish by far, could not ever do it.Also nobody around here has big tanks.

Check out unclejerrysworms.com not sure if they ship in canada or not but they have ok prices it's hard to beat walmart(2.59 for 24 I think) I have a fire eel around 20" and all he'll eat is worms

If you plan on cultering ( thank goodness we're moving soon! worms cost us an arm and a leg since I had to get rid of my worm bins!) Look into european NIghtcrawlers, they tolerate warmer temps much better then Canadian crawlers do. They don't get so large from what I understand but are just as easy to keep and maintain but don't need to be kept cool.
