Just saying hello, I have spent many years keeping fish and have been a member on lots of other fish forums, just happened accross this one for the first time today. It seems to fit me well.
I Currently have.
240 Gallon with a 22inch Giant Gourami, a couple big Syno's, 4 big Clown loaches, a few smallish cichilds, about a dozen rainbowfish, and 4 green cory's and couple Plecos.
125 Gallon - 14inch Albino Oscor, 8 inch Chocolate Cichlid, a Trio of big Nosybee Cichlids, a couple Topaz Cichlids, a 12 inch Clown Syno and A big Pleco.
40 Saltwater with Liverock - Singapore Angel, Red Coris Rass, Large Coral Banded Shrimp
20 Saltwater with a 5 inch Mantis Shrimp and a damsel fish
20 Gallon Fresh with a few tetras, and growing out a Red Tailed Leopard Pleco and a Long Finned Bristle Nose Pleco.

I live in Clinton, about 30 miles North of Davenport, about four blocks from the Mississippi.

No the Mantis can't catch it and has given up long ago. We keep her well fed with a diet of frozen food and live Hermit crabs and Snails.
I have had 2 Mantis shrimp and both lived peacefully with Damsel fish in small tanks.

I hope you didn't stop in the Clinton Pet store while you were in town. Has to be one of the filthiest Pet stores in the entire country.

My Mantis is more my Wife's Pet. Kind of a funny story behind the Mantis. Several years ago I set up a 75 gallon reef tank. I aquired a mantis in some live rock I purchased. While I was at work my wife managed to catch it and put it in a little tupperware dish until I got home. She immediatly wanted me to get rid of it - flush it or give it away immediatly. Instead I set up a little ten gallon tank for it. Nothing but 1 rock some sand and a sponge filter. I eventually added my Blue Damsels as they were little terrors in my reef anyway. After having it for a while it came to be my wife's favorite. Eventually it died after many years and we searched all over another, until finally after over a year of searching one of the quad city stores was able to get us a nice big female Peacock Mantis.

Ya the Peacocks are very cool, and really freak out people who visit.
Here is an old pick of ours. She is much more green in color now than when I took this.
