New to Gars

Ok, I'm new here. I'm an animal lover, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and lots of various tank critters. I have a fishing background. Always catch and release. But knowing many fisherman who brag about catching 20 fish a day and keeping them, and considering gar a garbage fish that some just throw on the shore, is it really a mortal sin to keep a gar in a clean tank that's a little less than the ideal size? They aren't exactly puppies or children. And I'm guessing their mortality rate in the wild makes there chances of reaching adulthood is very small. I dunno. I'm not advocating smaller than ideal tanks, but I'm not not agreeing with universal condemnation.
