New to keeping bigger fish...have a quick question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
X2 your tank is overstocked, even if the bass are small now, they get huge.do you plan to upgrade soon? you do know it's not leagal to release them back later right?

Lol!!! Everyone here started with a smaller tank and are consistently upgrading! I think that question EASILY answers itself. Like I said, I'm new to this and always am open to new information. As far as over-crowded comment, what size tank would be big enough for those 5 fish?

Hello, but that's incorrect. I certainly didn't do that and lots of other owners don't either. I would never purchase a fish knowing in advance that it would be too large for the tanks I have. It's somewhat incomprehensible to me although I understand that some people do that. If I will need a 150, I get a 150 now, not a 40 with a plan to get a 150. If I can't get a tank that's big enough, I choose fewer and / or smaller fish.

I never needed to add tanks because my pets outgrew them, because I added a properly sized tank when I got the fish. It's not hard to match the two for life, although I admit some owners don't or prefer to wait.

I'm not judging that or saying other people are wrong for doing it; but it's incorrect to say that everyone does that when it's certainly not true.

why are there so many people out there that are so consumed to jump on the back of any one that has a over crowded tank or a fish that will out grow a tank in years to come?I have large fish tanks, and yes my tanks are over crowded and take a lot of care to give my fish a clean environment in which they thrive and grow and stay healthy.as for keeping large fish that will out grow my tanks there are always people looking to bye large fish that have giant tanks and do not want to put the time and effort in growing them out.I have found out threw the years that aggressive fish do better in crowded conditions because they can not key in on one fish till they break down and die.My tanks are 400 gallons, and in no way am I saying that some one should do this with a 10/20 /30 Evan a 55,but with a 110 I do not see a problem

He said it was his first time keeping large tropical fish, so he's better knowing that the tank is overstocked now rather than finding out further down the line when the fish are either fighting or dying from disease because the water quality has dropped. He hadn't mentioned anything about upgrading to a larger tank when I replied either. Largemouth bass can grow over 24" long, so a 110 isn't big enough for one, never mind two of them plus two Oscars and a pleco.

In a 110 gallon tank how long do you think it would take to reach a length of 24 inches five years if he is lucky, which I think is highly unlikely.By then he could upgrade and get a larger tank by the time he needs too.and like I said with proper maintenance those fish would do fine, for years to come
