I just picked up a lima shovelnose at the LFS, its my first shovelnose cat. The bottom half of his tail is pretty elongated...at least twice the length of the top-half of his tail. I haven't noticed this on other pics of Limas...did I get something different? Is this common?

I'm on lunch break from work so don't have time to post pics now, but will when I get home tonight.

Not seen a lima like that before, hopefully someone more in the know will come and tell you what it is.

There are different strains of oima, but as far as I know they only differ in size, never seen one with that shape to it.

Nice looking fish though, interested to see what others make of it.

No there weren't any others. I went in to the LFS a couple weeks ago looking for a lima, but he didn't keep them in stock. So he ordered one for me. When I showed up at the LFS at lunch today the 'lima' was still in its original shipping bag, and he only ordered the 1. It was $16

If this isn't a lima...does anyone know what it is? and how big it will get? I plan to get several 2" cichla (peacock bass) in about 3-4 weeks. If its a smaller species of shovelnose I'll have to get rid of it before its outgrown and eaten.

When I get home I'll try to get some better pics for identification. Also, I'll take a short video or two and put them on youtube, and link them here. Probably won't be for a few hours though...assuming its still alive when I get home.

I'm not 100% sure now, but I'll check when I get home...the original shipping bag had a label on it that I -think- said: "shovelnose catfish--medium." I don't remember seeing Lima on it anywhere...but thats what it's supposed to be..

edit: Wow, I'm surprised no one has recognized it so far...now I'm really curious!

I'm thinking its some kind of cross, as far as I know there isnt any other catfish with that colouration, its fairly distinctive to the Lima (to my knowlege anyway).

I'm pretty confident it is "some" kind of Lima, could just be a mutant :headbang2
