We recently acquired a 55 gallon tank and have set it up on a stand and gotten a filter and rocks and faux plants and hides etc. we filled it, put water treatment in and let it run for 24 hours. Being an over zealous tank owner I now believe we added the fish too soon. We went after 24 hours and bought a 6 inch hybrid cichlid for the tank. We acclimated him in his bag for 15 minutes, and then put tank water in his bag and let him sit another 15. We then put him in the tank. He seemed fine yesterday, swimming around and rearranging some stones in the tank. Today, however he is in the corner at the bottom not moving much but still alive. I tested the ph and it is about 7.5-7.6. Can anyone tell me what to do now to help save the fish. I know the ph is on the high side, but before I add another drop of anything, I want to make sure I'm not going to screw up (again). Thanks in advance for any help.

try going to local fish/pet store and get PRIME.... THIS will detox ammonia and help your fish survive "cycling"... you should also read up on the nitrogen cycle in aquariums... WELCOME to MFK and good luck with your new pet....you might also look into a bacteria starter to help speed up the cycle ...although I have not used them I hear they DO work:)

Welcome to MFK! Go grab some Seachem Stability. Follow the instructions accordingly. It will vastly improve the cycling process.

What kind of hybrid cichlid is it?

Thanks so much. I'm really sorry didn't read the sticky on cycling until today which is why I'm in a panic. Our fish is a Texas Blue/Red Devil hybrid. So does that product take care of the ph or do I need something else in addition to the Stability?

your ph SHOULDN'T BE(and prob. wont be )an issue.. if you are on same water system as fish stores(city water..) prime and stability SHOULD SAVE THE FISH ... make sureyou dont add any more fish until tank is WELL cycled... and feed just a little bit every day or even every OTHER day...

Stability will help add necessary bacteria to your tank and media. Prime will help with your water changes. You will need both.

Your hybrid should be pretty hardy and should be fine. Just keep up with the Stability and Prime as you do your water changes.

So I need both prime and stability? I'm fixing to go to the store and get what I need so just trying to clarify...

yes .. the PRIME will detox the tank NOW... the STABILITY ,, AS I understand it ... WILL HELP ESTABLISH A GOOD CROP OF BENEFICIAL BACTERIA....:)... YOUR FISH WILL THANK YOU..as stated above you will need to do water changes ... almost daily(maybe 20%-33%)... while you cycle with a live fish..
