New to MFK and would love your advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could actually even be longer than four years that I've had him. I've lived here for three and had him at least a year before at my last house, so that's why I said at least four. So perhaps he won't get any bigger?? He and my bichir have been this size they are now for a very long time. Don't notice them getting any bigger. Called the lfs here that has big fish and they said they'd be happy to sell the Peacock Bass on consignment if I need to go that route once they arrive. Will see what they are like once they get here and decide if I can keep them for a little while (at least one) and then rehome later. They are holding a nice-sized Severum for me. I appreciate all the responses and tips for sure.

I have been trying all day to contact the store where I had placed the order for the 3 PBass. No answer/left v'mail. I finally sent an e-mail and they replied! Turns out they are moving today and are not staffing the phones. They said they would issue a refund to my card, no problem. Thanks for the advice against those for my tank. Now I am having to think about possibly taking my tsn to the lfs to put on consignment. I am considering going with a Southern Am. Cichlid tank. Would the various cichlids, oscar, severum, and angels do well together...oh, and my bichir. Also, how would a bgk be in this type environment?

the reason your bichir and tsn havnt grown anymore is that unfortunately they have been stunted possibly due to the tank being too small and not enough water changes/ filtration. good luck finding some good stock for that tank though

Okay, so this is what I currently have, just as an FYI...

200g
sand substrate
Fluval FX5 filtration
Python hose system

Current fish (have had for years):
12 - 14" tiger shovelnose
12 - 14" ornate bichir

Based on some of the responses here, how would these do together, if I rehome the tsn:

ornate bichir
black ghostknife
severum (3?)
oscar
parrot
various other S. Am. Cichlids (rams, etc) for color variation

I doubt the bichir is stunted thats a good size tank for it , seems like at about 12" there growth slows down quite a bit . I would stay away from oscar angel combo oscars arent really aggressive but very territorial . bocourti are beautiful fish and could go well with an oscar and your bichir . rams would be an expensive feeder for the bichir and oscar

Thanks! I know for sure they're not stunted in growth as they are the only two fish occupying a 7' long, 2' width swimming area for a couple of years by themselves. Filtration is good and both are happy and healthy fish. Thanks for some of the mentions!

the tsn is the fish i was referring to being stunted it should be way bigger than 12-14 inches at over 4 years old. i think the stocklist you came up with is pretty good, geos may do good in that combo too

Make a bichir tank :)
