New to MFK.....ideas for a pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From what I have seen...

If you do all the work yourself, you can save a ton of labor money that will help you get more liner and pump.
If you have the time and the health to dig the hole yourself, then you will save a lot of money, however if you have to hire a guy in a backhoe to dig the hole you will blow the $2000 fast.

(Remember to call to have the underground located first)

You can also save a bit of cash if you make your own filter.
UV filters are a lot of money sometimes, but most all outdoor ponds could use a good one.
As far as pumps go, most people like to get as big a pump as they can get.

as you finsih the pond you will also see the need for other things to dress up the pond, like beauty bark, rocks, seating benches or chairs, lighting, fence etc, etc etc,,it never stops...LOL

But $2000 is a nice hunk of coin and it can get you a dran nice big pond.

The only company I use is at....

www.aquascapeinc.com or call 1.866.877.6637

You should be able to view the types of pumps they have and see a comparison to high eff. and reg. pump.

I made one in my back yard, but I rushed to get it done before i deployed. and my wife said it leak so i stripped it and remade it out of concrete and then it cracked on me. still working on it. It is appr 14x5x2 1/2

I agree. If I had to do it all over again, I would have done the filter DIY. I would not recommend buying a filter.

I have always though that low-tech is the best-tech. My filter is brought, not DYI. It comes as a kit, but is really simple. A plastic box, 24x24x28deep. It has a bulk head in the bottom that is feed by the pump. Water goes up through a few pieces of 1-1.5" filter pads and then the hyacinths. The filter comes with a mesh bag that is to be filled w/lava rocks. I have done away w/ the lava rocks since I think they clog w/crap way to fast, and just place a few med. rocks on the pads to keep them from floating up. Other than the pads, the plants do all the work. The root system on the the hyacinths trap all particulates and can then be hosed off, I usually do it weekly. It is a very K.I.S.S. system....
