New to MFK. My introduction

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Take us thru the rest of the house....lifestyles
of the rich and famous. You can be robin leech.
Haha, far from rich.

Just good at finding deals lol
I got this tank, top, lights, initial hobs plus 2 big bins of misc pumps, power heads, etc. For 200$ haha. So I splurged on the dual canisters to remove the hobs that were messing up the view of the tank from the kitchen side. And of course to improve filtration.

You should get a bigger tank cause of the fish. They will get big. Then when territory is up for grabs then the jag is gonna beat ur other fish.

Hmm..I doubt I can convince the wife for a larger tank. 120 is plenty big. I'll have to ride it out and see.

Or maybe more decor/driftwood so everyone's happy??

Honestly the most aggressive ones in the tank are the two damn tiny convicts lol, cause they have paired up and look like they're attempting to spawn

Any ideas are welcome. I doubt a bigger tank is in the cards, MAYBE a 180 if I can fit it in the same spot DOWN the road.

Is there anything I can do. Or is it just a complete ticking time-bomb. U guys got me worried.
I feel like I've seen people with 120s more stocked then me with even larger more agressive fish long term and "they say" all is good haha

Have some time. If you can't upgrade maybe a plywood tank can be built as an option. If nothing else then maybe consider rehoming to avoid dead fish.

Out of my stock. What would be the max fish/options of which fish to keep.

I feel like the pleco and bichir do their own thing at the bottom.

The two oscars are like peas and carrots lol for now.

I guess the jag and dempsey are the only ones I can see causing problems. I'm kinda partial to my oscars and jag. I can do without the dempsey.

Maybe I'll keep it as is and make my 55 a home for my solo jag?

Hi Danny. Great looking tank and nice house too!

Is the jag male or female?

The 2 Oscars are a huge bioload and will get big. They grow quick! Jag will get big too. You'll have to move out the angels eventually. The giant danios may eventually get eaten. I think a 55 is too small for a jag since its only 12" wide. If it's a female jag it MIGHT get along with the Oscars. The female I had was pretty chill. But I agree that you'll need a larger tank for more territory for all those cichlids. The convicts especially in pairs can be very territorial. I think a large tank for your man cave is in order. ;)

I haven't had the jag long. But I don't know how to sex them. I guess I'll grow everyone out and within a year I'll butter up wifey to the idea of a real monster tank lol.
Is there anything I can do to help the situation in my CURRENT tank? More plants, caves or driftwood. Or would it just be a waste of time?

you don't have a year if you plan on keeping all those fish. the oscars should hit 10" in a year. if you're jag is male, id expect it to grow just as fast.
i do believe the consensus around here is that a lone male jag should be kept in a 125 or a 180 if we're talking long term. you might be able to get away with the two oscars in the 120 or an oscar and the jack dempsey in the 120. you'll have more time with the jack demspey though. they don't grow as fast.
