i am new here from fishindex.com.i came here becouse none of the fishindex members could answer my questions (fishindex is geared more towards community fish keepers and casual hobbiests).i have a red tail barracuda in a 150 gallon.would a wolf fish honestly couse problems for a red tail barracuda?if the wolf fish wont be goodwhat about a silver arawana?the only other thing that cought my interests was an african tiger fish i saw on liveaquaria.com.the thing is that its tank requirements are ridiculous, its price keeps fluctuating between 250 and 500 dollars, and also its not recommended for hoobiests, but public aquariums and profesional research facilities....any suggestions?

Your redtail is either a Acestroryhychus falcatus or a ctenolucius hujeta, probably the former. They are both very quick predators that are sometimes hard to wean from live food. They will eat live shrimp, worms, fish, frogs, etc, but seldom bother fish that they can't take whole, don't trust them with anything less then 1/2 their size. They are lightly built and not brawlers so are not good choices with aggressive or territorial fish. They need a tank that is at least 1 1/2-2 times as wide as they are long and 4-5 times that long. They also can be kept in groups. They like tanks that contain plants to lurk in and open areas for swimming or they get flighty. the hujeta gets 9-10" long and the falcatus to 15-16". Wolf fish will probably kill them and so will larger aros. Good tank mates are other fish around the same size that like neutral to slightly acidic water and are not to aggressive, wide or deep bodied fish can be a bit smaller. Some mid sized plecos, black ghost knifefish, silver dollars, some headstanders, and even some curimatas would work.
African tigers can get very large, over 5 feet long and just wont work once they get bigger than the fish you have.

By the way, welcome to MFK.

thank you for that info.in that case i will probably take the redtail back to my lfs.I just got the tank cycled and put him in the other day so its not too late.what i relly want is the wolf fish.i guess i just assumed it would work so i bought the redtail when i had the chance.
ive looked around and see that everybody seems to have trouble finding tankmates for their wolf fish, but theres got to be something that, while obviously not 100% garuanteed to work, would be a decent bet, right?
i havent asked my lfs owner if he could get me a wolf fish yet but he did get me the redtail pretty quick,do you guys think ill have a problem getting my hands on one?and if i can find one, what kind of price range am i looking at?
i have a 14" red devil that i am not able to keep with even a pleco.would that be a fair tank-mate?
if it comes down to keeping the wolf fish alone in the 150 than thats what i might do.

just my opinion but red tail wolves are pretty docile in comparison to the common wolf. i think it could work in a 150g. as long as you keep him well fed. im sure there are some guys who will disagree

not looking for docile, but thanks for the tip.as i mentioned,if i cant keep anything else whatsoever with the wolf fish than i will have a lone wolf fish.i just think there are fish out there it will be able to share a 150 with.if i need to find what that fish is by experimentation than so be it, but some pointers in the right direction would be awesome.

foxy, take it from someone who has owned 2 redtail cudas, acestrorhynchus altus, and a wolf (hoplias) - keep the cuda.

Wolves are impressive predators, but they are so boring. You would not want a tank with just 1 wolf fish. They just sit there all day like a turd with teeth, lurking. They almost never swim around, never take any notice of you etc

And sometimes mine would wait until night time to nail a feeder goldfish.

I loved my 2 cudas, lightning fast, nailed feeders as soon as they hit the water, they are also prettier than the wolf, especially as they grow.

Get a few more cudas, and more compatible tankmates that don't get too huge and you'll have a fun tank.

I have never kept wolves but a friend had one with a larger pacu in a 300g, both were about 24" long at the time.
