Hi all

Im new to the forums and currently have a malawi cichlid setup in a 48"l x17"d x22"h in-wall tank, have 2 canister filters running and its an open top aquarium

Im looking for advice about changing my setup as Im not sure which way to go, my friend has an 8x3x2 tank and has an Alligator Gar, 2x Tiger Oscars & 1x Red Tail Cat

I've looked through different species such as Gar, Snakeheads etc and was wondering what would be suitable for my size of tank and some ideas on setups or what i could keep

Any help would be great

Thanks

Davie.

gars and snakeheads would rpobibly outgrow that. I would do cichlids, I would a a community of mid sized south and central american cichlids. The centreel and south american cichlids are larger bodied and are very diffrent.

Your tank is 75g. Gonna be tough to fit a "monster" in there. Gars are certainly out of the running. If your wanting a big fish why not a flowerhorn or oscar?

I would go with an oscar or flowerhorn. Possibly a larger fish if you are willing to give it to your friend when it outgrows your tank.

I'm sure you'll all give my crap bout this, but used to house a Florida Gar in a 75gal. It reached 17" the whole 12yrs I had it. I did eventually put it in a 120, but did fine for the long time it was in the 75.
As for other ideas tho, Flowerhorns b nice, Severums come to mind. Always wanted to grow out a few red devils in a decent sized tank. Those get pretty ferocious. Could always go piranha tank too if into those, alot of different variety of them

So in my size of tank if I was to head down the flowerhorn route how many could I keep? Size would suggest only one, could I house one with an Oscar? What sort of setup would I require? My tank is full of rock at the mo and coral sand to buffer my Malawi 's Ph, I am over filtered too so would that help? Thx for all the feedback

one oscar maybe still enough.but maybe there will be a territory problem.with your tank size, why don't you try house micro monster, like piranha, ctenopoma, or senegal bichir?

Because I wanted one or preferably two big fish, ctenopoma get to 6" so not far removed from my existing malawis, Senegal bichir just ain't my thing, an piranha are just boring, really wanted something different, colorful and some character love Oscars, had one before but liking the idea of the flowerhorn, I know size maybe an issue and the aggression of the flowerhorn, but was thinking if I got them both at the same time as juveniles and made sure the Oscar was bigger, would that help the aggression?
