Its gonna depend on the temperment of both fish but more the flowerhorn on if you can keep bith a flowerhorn and an oscar in a 75g tank together. Getting them both young may help and im sure it will work for a while but their aggression doesnt "bloom" until a little later. You could always rehome the oscar later as well.

Because I wanted one or preferably two big fish, ctenopoma get to 6" so not far removed from my existing malawis, Senegal bichir just ain't my thing, an piranha are just boring, really wanted something different, colorful and some character love Oscars, had one before but liking the idea of the flowerhorn, I know size maybe an issue and the aggression of the flowerhorn, but was thinking if I got them both at the same time as juveniles and made sure the Oscar was bigger, would that help the aggression?

I would suggest a group of Cichlids, a lid, and the intent to get something bigger as they grow. lol

Sorry.. missed that! Its personal preference of course but I am not a fan of tanks with just one or two fish. If there is going to be a fish that kills off its cohabitants I personally wouldnt get it, but obviously a lot of people like that.

Do not plan on adding an Oscar to a 75 gallon tank unless you want it to be the only fish that is going to live in that tank.

A Flowerhorn would be an awesome 75gallon solo fish as well.

...Putting them in the same tank is just a bad idea.

Are flowerhorn really that aggressive? I know Oscars can be pretty mean

Oscars are pussy cats, the only reason they have the "mean fish" rep is because they eat anything that will fit in their mouths, not mean, just pigs (I'm sure there are a few real mean ones).

The Flowerhorn on the other hand, can get pretty rambunctious.

Either of these fish will do better without the buffers that you have added for your Africans as they are South American based.

What exactly are you trying to do with your setup? It sounds like you want a mini monster tank: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?227845-The-End-All-Mini-Monster-Thread
...That's a great place to start looking.

Honestly in your tank I would suggest a pair of smaller Central American cichlids along with a few dithers and a small clean up crew or fish. A Senegal Bichir may work as with the pair as well (good mini monster) but you'd have to be careful when picking his/her tank mates because of their tendency to pick off small fish.

I'm not sure however if this setup would be much different than your current setup

OK first of all, thanks for the great feedback, I have decided to go for the single flowerhorn and have ordered a single 4" red Texas from a reputable supplier, all my existing cichlids are advertised for new homes, my next question is can I keep my two synodontis eupterus? As a clean up crew? They are both pushing 3" and the serrated fins keep the malawis away, would the flowerhorn learn to leave them or is an alternative cat better? No I'm not stupid or cruel enough to put a shovelnose or red tail in there, did consider either pictures because of their speed or pangasius but they get huge too, any help would be great, cheers
