New to oscars

Lemon are not very common, also called sunshine oscars, which - as I believe - are a TYPE of lutino.

Lutinos vary in pattern and include everything from the snow oscar to the super red. They are basically all of the non-black varieties that exhibit yellow in varying shades. But I could be wrong, that's just how I've come to understand it. Somebody correct me if I am wrong!

actually, those albino oscars tht we usually see in a lfs is not an albino at all. those tht are pure white and have no colour pigments at all neither black fins, and have white eyes, are the ones tht are called albino oscars.
oscars tht are primarily white, have orange pigments and sometimes black fins are called lutino oscars. soo, his oscar is probably a red lutino oscar.

Most varieties of Oscar are common and easy to find, but that makes them no less interesting as wet-pets! Regardless of coloration, an Oscar is one of the most reactive and adorable aquarium fish around. You are in for a great time! Feed a variety of live foods, it's said to help prevent HITH. And ground your tank, that's a big one, too!

Can we back up a second? Never heard of "grounding a tank". Can you elaborate? Anyone else doing this?

I'd never heard of it either. I just let it go to keep the discussion going about the Oscar, but it does have me wondering..

Albinism is a genetic defect that makes the body incapable of producing melanin, not all pigment. Albinism is most easily distinguished visually from Leucism by an animal presenting with red eyes in fish and certain other animals the color of the animal appears off white rather then true white. The eyes appear red/pink due to the lack of melanin which makes the red of the underlying blood vessels and retina visible through the iris. As such an animal can still present with color but not any melanin based colors so the Albino Oscars even Albino Tiger Oscars with all that red coloration on the body are indeed albinos, hence the names Albino Tiger Oscar.

Leucism is a condition in which all pigment is reduced not just melanin. As such they often present with normal colored eyes, this is because the melanocytes of the RPE are not derived from the neural crest, instead an outpouching of the neural tube generates the optic cup which, in turn, forms the retina. As these cells are from an independent developmental origin, they are typically unaffected by the genetic cause of leucism while in Albinism it is affected. If you see an Oscar devoid of color(meaning being white) and the iris of the Oscar is black then the Oscar is Leucistic not Albino.

The article seems to be incorrect, google albinism and leucism and you'll see the definition of each. As I said above Albinism is the lack of melanin not all coloration and Leucism is the reduction of all colors.
